Need help with Petco team

I'm not sure whether this strategy is sound and could use feedback from veteran players. Since Petco supresses offense, I decided to feild an all glove team and go cheap on pitching. For a little extra pep I got pitchers that pitch in reverse. On the offense side I went with high OBP and guys that hit righty's hard. The thing that scares me is that my most expensive pitcher is a middle reliever.

well the only time I played in petco it was a mini-disaster but I think you've done a good job with your team. Look for hitters with direct hit home runs. Be patient with your hitters, their numbers might dip quite a bit in petco but keep in mind those whose main role is defensive (Castillo, Izturis and Jones mainly)
Luckyman (Marcus Wilby) had a very interesting post (all of his posts are always gravy) regarding a team if his in petco. Its in the strategy forum, I forget the name but it shouldn't be hard to find since that forum doesn't have nearly as many threads as this one. The best advise I could offer is to learn from the big kahoona from his own words.

Personally, I'm not an advocate of the hard righty/lefty RP's. Hal never will do what your intention is with those two guys. Wouldn't be bad if you have any control like face to face, but you don't.

My thoughts, without looking at your division foes. your home park is follows:
7 Left singles 1 right singles 1 left and right homruns
Pitching i wont comment at it, i leave that to somone else.

however, the hitting I will do my best here.

From your catchers, None will produce, in petco, the best option there is either getting somone like Jamie burke, who isnt park dependable, and has a great clutch. and also is reasonable in price.
Mathney, i would keep good backup if burke( if available) goes down.

1b)Hafner, too park dependable, in your home, on the road unless your playing in a park that favours lefties, and your not facing alot lefties, hafner is waste of 8million, where you could go cheaper, somone like casey who hits well in any park, and gives you a solid number #3 hitter from both sides of the plate.
Thome, Is really not worth in a park like petco, much better suited in shea, or coors, i would consider trading him for casey, i think most ppl will do that trade hands down,
Phelps, i like, against lefties, however again we are back to your park, he isnt an idea type OBP type guy, but very nice in shea or safeco, or even wrigley. but in petco, again, no OBP.
Castillo, he do well against lefties, in any park, however, will suffer at home, but since he has a great range, dont trade him, unless you facing alot righties in your division, if that is the case i would consider to move him for either, B.Roberts, or ALex Cora.
Bettre, Is keeper, no comments on him, he hit well in almost any park, not sure if he do well in shea, however i had used him in safeco, and thoose two parks have abit in common, so i think he do nice in petco.
Blum, is a decent backup, that i would keep.
Izturis, C. is a keeper, however dont bat him near the top of the order against left, or right, he needs to bat in clutch spot to improve is AVG, from 7th to 9th I would suggest.
your OF, all not suitable in petco, however you might be able to trade Jones to coors team, for maybe damon, that might not be a bad idea, damon will give you that extra OBP, that you're really going to need at home, and what i see, you DONT any. except for beltre, and beltre needs to bat in RBI spot, like 3rd or 4th.
I hope that helps, best of luck

My 2 cents

Postby genevajack » Sat Dec 17, 2005 3:35 am

I have used this strategy several times and it usually works. I have had some success at Petco-including my second (last) championship. It was a glove team with a league leading ERA. But I had Johnson and Schilling. Ive used cheap pitchers with some success. However-your reverse RHP are a little excessive.

You have a Wrigley team and a Minute Maid team in your division. Id replace the two reverse RHP with hard RHP. Is Bonderman available?

Also-you don't need Marte on this team-that 4th relief P slot might be a better bet if you had a cheap hard RH specialist (Telemaco, Carter) to use against the RH batters you will face both at home and on the road.

On the hitting side-this team is better suited for a power park. I love Hafner-Phelps, but don't know if it is the right combo in Petco. Same with Thome. You need OBP from hits-not BP HRs or walks. Is Casey available? Beltre-probably OK.

Castillo-Izturis. Stellar.

I think Posada is okay at Petco. He'll end up batting only .220-.230 but will hit a few HRs (20+) and will walk a lot.

My two cents that may help,
Instead of Marte and Embree (when I have had them, they get lit up),
a better less expensive duo for lefties whom I have had success with are Scott Eyre and Ricardo Rincon, both 1.04 million each. If one is not available, pickup Trevor Miller he is good too.
If possible, I would drop Hafner and try to get Frank Thomas and try to upgrade one or two of the SPs. It is important to have a stud starter to win you at least 80% of their starts in petco. The reason I say this, if a team comes to your ballpark with a good to great starter, they will beat you often.
From what I have seen in petco teams is that the great pitching cards excell and the average ones do ok.
Your defense should be solid.
In case you are thinking of dropping posada, his numbers for one of my petco teams that one a championship were
.233 avg, .363 obp 13 HRs, 62 runs, 66 RBIs, not great but good OBP.
Good luck
