General Managers Keeper League

Hmmm.

OK.

Now I don't know why Qk was so worried about when we would be doing this first prospect draft since the only guys we could draft wouldn't be getting cards anyway?

WOW Wish I saw that before, my own fault, but here I was thinking, we'd be able to grab guys like Bucholz and Pence in the prospects draft.

Now what about a guy like Kelly Johnson, who doesn't have a card in this set, but did in last years??

It seems as if "no clock" will equal "no picks". [/quote:0f2000e8f5][/b:0f2000e8f5]

Could be, AFD isn't available until monday, so you could be right.

Players with MLB experience that are not eligible for this draft cannot be taken until the FA draft correct?[/quote:f1938eb326]

Yes, that is correct. No MLB experience of any kind for the prospect draft.
Only SOM cards for this draft. And any player with at least 1 at bat or 1 batter faced are eligible for the annual spring free agent draft.[/quote:f1938eb326]

That FA draft order will be tied to record correct? And will we effort to do that draft before the ratings come out for next years set?[/quote:f1938eb326]

Yes, the draft order all future drafts (except the initial prospect draft) will be non-serpentine and based on each owners record. The prospect and supplemental draft order is determined by the last season played records.
The annual free agent draft order is determined by the cumulative records of each owner.[/quote:f1938eb326]

Yeah, I missed that too but guys like Kelly Johnson shouldn't be avail yet.

What really hurts to me, is that guys who only came up for a few AB'S or IP's in September won't be eligible (even though they are really rookies still).

Now, I have to check and see if a guy HAD an IP or AB when they are drafted.

It would have been easier to just classify guys who had NO MLB experience PRIOR to this current season, since we are still going to play a current season in this set.

Now, guys will have every reason to tank this one season away.

Sandy, I agree with the above. I think any teams like mine that intend to try to compete for this season are at a real disadvantage with the current structure.

I was going to wait 'til hearing back from KD, but I put a couple of new proposals to him in order to address this. Maybe everyone can chime in.

Also, I let him know my opinion - that since the original rule was changed by KD's decision as Commish (meaning non-carded players not eligible) that I think he should also make a "best for the league" decision King Solomon-style in order to address this issue & not go by super-majority. I'd think he'd appreciate your support if that becomes the case - I know I would.

Here were 2 alternatives that I proposed:

A) Make both the initial FA draft & the prospect draft serpentine.

B) End this current draft at 30 or 35 players, then hold a subsequent FA draft to complete the 40 man roster where anyone who had played in a game is now eligible (per the original rules). This draft would not be on the draft site but here on the boards & would also be serpentine but not based on any seasons played.

At this point I tend to favor B myself as I think it is truer to the spirit of KD's original rules, which state as follows:

[quote:fa65ba8289]Initial Draft:
1) The initial draft is a 41 round live draft. Rounds 1 through 40 are for players; Round 41 is for the stadium.
2) Only those players who have at least 1 game MLB experience are eligible for the initial draft. MLB experience can be in any year past or present.
These players do not need to have had a SOM card at any time - just MLB experience.
3) The initial draft is serpentine; all subsequent Free Agent drafts are non-serpentine based upon the previous season's regular season records. Draft picks are tradeable.

I missed this one too, Sandy. My "refresh" button was getting worn, so it is probably just as well. See you folks later, then.

I'm not sure how I feel about these mid-draft discussions about what the rules were, may have been, or ought to be. They seemed pretty clear to me and it has been KD's call to make from the beginning.

While I can understand, and certainly find Qk's Proposal B reasonable, I thought the original rules made perfect sense and were the ones we all agreed to when this draft began.

[quote:c422eec52f]The rules are as follows:

Initial Draft:
1) The initial draft is a 41 round live draft. Rounds 1 through 40 are for players; Round 41 is for the stadium.
2) Only those players who were issued SOM cards this year and appear on the live draft website are eligible for the initial draft.
3) The initial draft is serpentine; all subsequent Free Agent drafts are non-serpentine based upon the previous season's regular season records. Draft picks are tradeable.

Doesn't seem hard to me, frankly. Of course, for me the Keeper League concept is exactly what I like best about our online community and this group includes most of the finest, so I'm certainly willing to go with what is finally determined. As I noted, though, KD chose to take on the huge responsibility of running the league and the draft, employing what I presume are the lessons he felt he's learned from the HCKL experience and Sandy's league, so I think it should be his call.

About the draft stuff my main "concern" is that after we play this initial season I will have to drop at least 10 players & No more than 15.

Essentially it makes 10 picks of the inital draft almost useless, we can leave those last 10 picks to AD, or something like that. Why spend all the time choosing 40 players I'd like to ride if I only keep 30. So, finishing the draft at 30-35 and then having the FA to complete the 40 man roster seems like a smart(er) way to go.

Just my .02

Cube - the problem was that the original rules (as sent out by KD in the email, NOT the ones posted on this board) were changed, and some of us (at least both myself & Smokey) didn't realize about the changes until the draft was already under way. I'm sure it wasn't intentional, but the way the changes were made severely penalizes any team that is "going for it" in the initial season.

This exchange, when we were already drafting in Rnd 1, tells the story - compare the version of the rule KD quotes below to the one Smokey & I were going from in email (above):

Doc - KD can clarify but I believe the rule is meant to be anyone who has played in an MLB to date, meaning those who made their 1st appearance this year are eligible.

And don't worry, it's not stupid at all, I meant to ask KD to post on the same thing....thanks for the reminder! Very Happy

i think you can draft anyone that has played in MLB even if his only experience is this year.

Draft
picks are tradeable.

I intended that we would draft only those players that have SOM cards initially. We would play a season and have a prospect player draft.

Then next spring we will have our annual F/A draft. In the spring draft you can draft the guys like Norris Hopper, Kelly Johnson, Reggie Willits and Dice-K who don't have cards this year but played in MLB.

Hope this clears up the confusion. Only those players on the SOM draft website are eligible for this initial draft. [/quote:2828479a1a]

Again, for comparison, here is the language in the original rules, some highlights added:

[quote:b5edb08f54]Initial Draft:
1) The initial draft is a 41 round live draft. Rounds 1 through 40 are for players; Round 41 is for the stadium.
2) Only those players who have at least 1 game MLB experience are eligible for the initial draft. MLB experience can be in any year past or present.
[b:b5edb08f54]These players do not need to have had a SOM card at any time - just MLB experience.[/b:b5edb08f54]
3) The initial draft is serpentine; all subsequent Free Agent drafts are non-serpentine based upon the previous season's regular season records. Draft picks are tradeable. [/quote:b5edb08f54]

I think it's pretty clear from the above that some of us started the draft with one set of rules in mind, and others started with another set of rules in mind. I think it's fair to ask KD to come up with a compromise that doesn't penalize either group.
