General Managers Keeper League

Postby kaviksdad » Sat Sep 22, 2007 3:12 pm

Before I address the other issues that have arisen I'd like to make a couple of things clear.

First, regarding the dropping of 10-15 players per year:

After spending 6 seasons in USKL/HCKL type leagues, I've found the same players tend to be successful in each of the leagues I'm involved in. Without getting into any of the myriad reasons why this might be so, I decided in this league that we would have to release at least 25% of our team each year. This, in my opinion, will increase parity. I want everyone to have a chance to go from the bottom to the championship every year.

Second, regarding my decision to only allow players with cards in the initial draft:

Qk is right in that my initial rules were to allow anyone with MLB experience to be a part of the initial draft. Then I understood just how much of a problem this would be on the som draft site. Look at how smoothly this draft has gone - now imagine trying to do this either on the thread, or in a combination of website/thread picking. It would be a problem that I have neither the time nor desire to confront. So my decision was easy.

Third, the perception that some teams will "tank it" this first season in order to secure a high draft slot in the prospect and free agent drafts:

I fully intend to compete for the championship this first season. The decision to stock up on prospects for next year is a choice some have embraced. To that I say - "Good Luck." I've been stocking up on prospects for 6 plus seasons in the other USKL/HCKL leagues I'm in and haven't won yet. Perhaps I'm just a lousy manager - who knows the reason. But I won't prevent others from adopting any strategy they choose to make. "Tanking" games won't be tolerated - but I have no doubt that all players here will make their best use of the players they have to win games. I am certain there will be different levels of talent on each team, but that is to be expected in a league like this.

I will address the other issues/suggestions sometime later today.

What ever you decide as Commish is fine with me. I have no problem with the min/max drops in fact I like that.

I hope you don't take my comments as complaining it was merely an osbervation that applies only to this initial draft given its timing in relation to MLB's season stats essentially done.

Once again, so far the draft has been gravy and I am psyched about getting things going.

Not bad when you have Pujols, Aramis and Vladdy driving in Crawford, Roberts and Soriano. With My wunder boy Yadier behind the plate and two of the best both in 2B ans SS to anchor your franchise... not to mention one of the top 1Bs, RF, LF, 3B... well, I figured since we won't be drafting this weekend we might as well be yapping.

Now if oNly I could get me some pitching.

I agree that there's a difference between tanking & stocking up on prospects, my concern is that we're creating a perverse incentive to ditch the 1st season by doing the latter and we have already created a very unbalanced league in terms of teams that are "going for it" vs. stocking up. I count maybe 2-3 teams that are "going for it".

Again, I'll live with whatever decision gets made by KD, but the impact of moving the rookies from this year to the FA draft was not even [b:d6a95e6f35]discussed[/b:d6a95e6f35] here until we were about 3-4 rounds in, and strategies were already shaped, and that's a big issue.

I also think that, given how many teams are stockpiling vs. going for it, the whole super-majority voting should not apply since a) the initial rule change was not voted on, so why should this one be, and b) we have an immediate conflict of interest because the majority of teams are stockpiling & so would need to vote against their own interests if we move away from doing a non-serpentine all-inclusive FA draft based on order of standings.

I have taken the concerns presented here into consideration and have decided the following:

1) I modified the rules allowing only those players with SOM cards eligible for the draft on Sept. 13th. The draft actually began on Sept. 16th. For 3 days the rules, which are posted at the beginning of this thread, were there for all to read and understand. I understand that Qk and I may have had communication problems, as I sent him a preliminary set of the rules before the league began that did not include this modification. Nevertheless, [b:4ab9367e0d]I believe that since everyone had the same access to the rules long before the draft began, there is no need for me unilaterally change them at this point.[/b:4ab9367e0d] To do so would put those players who do not follow this thread as closely as others at a disadvantage, and could only lead to more confusion.
[b:4ab9367e0d]
So I will not unilaterally make any changes to the initial draft process. [/b:4ab9367e0d]

2) As to the proposals to a) make next season's free agent draft and prospect draft serpentine and b) end the current draft at 30-35 and allow non-carded players to be chosen on the boards:

The rules of this league do not specify [b:4ab9367e0d]when[/b:4ab9367e0d] rule changes can be made, but they do specify [b:4ab9367e0d]how[/b:4ab9367e0d] they are made. While I consider this to be "my" league, I do so only in the spirit that I put it together and got it off the ground (with help, of course). I don't feel that I should be making rule changes on my own. It may be "my" league, but it belongs to each of us. There is a process place to change the rules.

I believe that Qk and Sandy have valid concerns and I can sympathize. I'm sure each of us has our concerns about how this draft is playing out - and that there might be owners sacrificing this coming season in order to set up next year. Those are valid concerns and to address them I will offer the following proposals for vote:

[b:4ab9367e0d]Proposal No. 1:[/b:4ab9367e0d]

The initial prospect draft and the 2008 spring free agent draft are to be serpentine. This decision will not affect future spring free agent or prospect drafts.

[b:4ab9367e0d]Proposal No. 2:[/b:4ab9367e0d]

The current draft will be stopped after 36 rounds. At that time, any player with MLB experience will become eligible. Rounds 37 through 40 will be held on the boards. [b:4ab9367e0d]The draft order for Rounds 36 through 40 will be determined by randomizer[/b:4ab9367e0d] The league commissioner will be responsible for running this board draft. There will be no less than a 2 day delay in order to allow all players to research the newly available players.

Both rule changes are subject to the super-majority. 8 yes votes will be necessary to approve either proposal.

i think it is too early to say teams are "tanking" or being weak.... there is still plenty of talent left to build decent teams of the guys who are left that had decent years in 06 but aren't so good in 07.

and i agree with Kav that the change to only drafting carded players was done before the draft so's everyone had a change to be aware of it.

first prospect draft is serp anyway.... i HOPE we are not talking about changing how the order is done again, we already had that vote and did not get the super majoritiy....
