Is there an anti-Schmidt sentiment? Last two leagues, here's what happened in draft.

#1: Schmidt goes undrafted, and not picked up on waivers

#2: Since I have 9M left over, I stick Schmidt last on my card, and get him.

I don't know what the deal is with Schmidt ... I've never had him on one of my teams. In a live draft league we just started, he was a first round pick, and he just got dropped after 6 games. I would have grabbed him in a heartbeat, but jablowmi beat me to him.

$8.43 is a BIG price tag for that talent, though. And, the "1" defensively on the corners isn't nearly as valuable as it is up the middle.

Interesting debate ... lets hear from the masses !

I've just had Schmidt once and was very happy with the result. I got hammered in a vet draft and had the first waiver pick. I had plenty of spare cash, and he was by far the best available player, so I grabbed him.

In neutral Memorial, he hit 50 HR and had a .969 OBP, with 119 R and 122 RBI--besides the great D at 3B. Despite my awful draft, he led my team to 89 wins. Unfortunately, we missed the wildcard by one game, but that wasn't his fault.

I've never tried to draft him,and I can see why he sometimes goes undrafted, because he is so expensive, but IMHO he's worth the $$ in any of his four good years. I would take him again off waivers if I had the chance or draft him onto the right team.

I have had him twice and he has been very disappointing. On one team, he went around 40 games without a home run. If you're buying Schmidt, you want power. He did manage to finish with 38 HR's but had an average of .244 on his '82 card.

In a current league I am in, he was dropped after 48 games and he is still sitting out there as a free agent. He was hitting .188 with 9 HR and an OBP of .288. The team that had him played home games in Anaheim with division rivals in Riverfront, Kingdome and Dodger Stadium. Hardly worth over 8 million for that type of performance.

With so many options at third, Schmidt just isn't worth the money he costs.

Schmidt seems to perform in almost every league I have been in. I could see how he could underperform if there were little or no LH SP in his division. Certainly someone to build a team around. I have seen all the higher priced stars on the waiver wire at one time or another.

schmidt can be an absolute monster but the only time I had him I dropped him... trying him out again in a new league.

Schmidt is usually worth every penny.

I had his '86 card on a division-winning Comiskey team where he crushed 39 HRS, 123 RBI's, .312 BA, .977 OPS.

Then, I had his '82 in an all-Royals Stadium theme league with an 87-75 2nd place team. Again, big numbers: 44 HRS, 122 RBI's, .263 BA, .952 OPS, 16 SB's. And this with 162 games of a 2 BPHR rating.

Then, I had his '80 in an all-Murphy theme league. My team sucked but not because of Schmidt: 60 HRS, 127 RBI's, .264 BA, 1.014 OPS.

But then, I had him in the Kingdome-- and after 140 or so at bats I had to drop him. OPS under .800, no pop.

There are other third basemen out there. Molitor always does well for me and I've had good luck with Wallach and DeCinces.

But three out of four isn't bad for any player in 80's. If you get one of Schmidt's four great cards, he'll perform in any park. He plays great defense and even steals some bases. He's worth the money.

Just checked out the ballparks of the other teams. One of the divisions has 2 Kingdomes and a Fulton. I'll be taking Straw, Schmidt, G. Carter, Lopes, G. Walker and Hayes (and even Lopes) from the Astrodome on the road. I think I'll be able to hang on outside the ballpark. Dropped Liebrandt for Langston. I know he gives up walks, but not many HR's or hits allowed.

If this were a real life rotation:

Langston (flame thrower)
Morris (a bulldog)
Hough (knuckler)
Key (control)

I think a typical series would befuddle an opposing lineup, esp. if I switched Hough and Morris in the rotation. Can you imagine going from Langston to Hough in a double header?

Dearest Sean,

I gave Schimdt the boot after game 6 in our league. He got injured on a flyout vs lefty in the first series which narrows down the cards some but it includes his worst year.

The next series, I left my 3B option blank on my lineup card to let HAL choose the 3B for me since I was facing 1 lefty and 2 righties. HAL benched Schmidt against the lefty ( :!: ) and then decided to bat him ninth against the RH pitchers.

Suffice to say, I am 99% certain that he's in his worst year since he's a 2R. HAL is stupid but he's not that crazy to bench Schmidt against a lefty unless there is a good reason. (He decided to play Smalley at 3B against the lefty that night.)

Pretty sure you saved some money by not picking him up. I felt pretty comfortable letting him go though. If it turns out roses for Jablowmi though, I'm in trouble since he's my division mate. I think I guessed right though.

Schmidt in all the other years though is great and worth the money!
