Hal - Use the Defensive Replacements!!

What does it take to get Hal to use the defensive replacements? I am in the finals and last night in game 4 with a 2-run lead in the 9th, Hal refuses to use my defensive replacements to get my 4s in LF and RF out. Thankfully it didn't cost me. But at times I really scratch my head over when and how Hal puts in the defensive subs when you have them identified under manager strategy. :?

Do I also need to check the box on the player card that carries a frying pan into the field instead of a glove?

Hey doc...

I notice that HAL subs in a defensive replacement about 50% of the time.

My guess is it has something to do with the score and/or when that guy that you are replacing comes up.

But don't quote me on that. :roll:

Dean - I just checked the boxes. Hopefully my team will be in a position in the finals (i.e. has a lead late in the game) to see if it works better. :wink:

HAL never ceases to amaze...
however, regarding def subs, in my limited experience,
Be careful not to have good bats as defensive subs, because,
my worst offensive guys have been routinely subbed...
case in point...at the moment Tony Scott subs in for Gamble and has been inserted around 8th or 9th for about seven straight games!

maybe HAL is thinking have BATS to pinch if needed???

no. Checking the box on the player card only says replace him when you have a lead. It does not say replace with a superior fielder. It does not say replace with my designated defensive replacement. Think of it as get this injury prone guy out so he gets some rest and does not get injured.

Now if you happen to be able to have a great defensive player on the bench at that position and that is the only player rated for that position on the bench then HAL will pick him and you can leave that defensive replacement choice out of your managerial settings. Using both will only confuse HAL though and increase your chances of him doing something HALish.

No, I disagree. I think if you have, let's say, Ortiz as your 1B and Snow as his defensive replacement, you should mark Ortiz to remove with lead, [i:e6566fdd9e]and[/i:e6566fdd9e] put Snow as the 1B defensive replacement. It doesn't get "confused" about that; it only makes it more likely to make the move it's supposed to make.

I agree with Dean. I don't have any trouble getting Hal to make defensive replacements in close games where I have the lead if I have both boxes checked. In fact, if I am going to only check one box, I have better luck clicking on the player's card I want replaced.
