Thanks for all who have signed up so far, veterans and auction draft rookies alike!

Penn - Thanks for the clarification, I did not know you had to set the auction up. As always, thanks for having your site available to make Strat even more gratifying.

Sean - Get ready to be hooked, I guarantee this will become your favorite Strat format. And thanks for the kind words, friendly rivalry between staunch competitors is always appreciated!

Chief - This is the perfect venue for limited computer access. The last time I played this format, I was travelling from Europe to the US and back to the United Kingdom and had at most 20 minutes of computer access time per day. I was making bids from airport internet kiosks, and as long as you can check in at least once per 24 hour period, you shouldn't lose any players you are bidding on. Not sure why you couldn't access Penn's site, if you decide to join send him a PM and I'm sure he can hook you up. Penn is definitely computer savvy.

You either love or hate auctions. I think they are the best and the most exciting way to draft but some people hate them.

If you its your worst nightmare to see a player overbid on after 23 hr and 55 minutes giving that player 24 new hours of expiration time this will drive you nuts :D :D

In most cases the first players dont expire for the first couple of days, "feeling out" is happening early on. Once people open enough players and bid high enough on certain players lots of players will start to expire. The auction lasts about two weeks.

Penn,

what is the format of the auction? How does it start, etc? How is it different than a live draft? What are the rules?

Thanks,

Sean

let me try and post all the rules...

1. 180 mil auction dollars to spend.
2. Max 33 bids can be won, this means you will own the rights for up to 32 players and min one stadium. You can own less players and you can own TWO stadiums.
3. Must have a valid TSN draft card before the primary auction ends. If you can not build a TSN draft card then penality is that you MUST DROP your two most expensive bids won. These players will be available after the draft by everyone except you.

4. Bids are 24 hours in length, if someone bids on a player that player has a NEW 24 hour expiry.

5. We must open 6 new bids per day each, this is the only way the draft keeps moving. You will open 6 bids until you have I think 26 bid open or won total. Please remember this so that you dont just open players you dont want once you have 26 bids out there.

6. The primary auction ends when we all have valid TSN draft cards, we then draft our league and the auction drop/add is allowed. You can drop a player on the auction site but we have a rule that you can not rebid on that player, this stops people from dropping player and rebidding on him to reduce their $$$ cost on him

7. Trading is allowed AFTER the auction, please do not discuss trade option during the auction. We dont want any sort of collusion, example [i:9133059ef2]I bid on a SS for you and trade him later to you if you bid on the RF expiring right now.[/i:9133059ef2]

8. Now here is the interesting part, you can not just pick up players during the season. You must first win them on the auction site. The auction is always on for the league, preseason and throughout the season. bids are only 6 hours in length during the preseason and season though so there is only a small window for someone to overbid you on a player. Thats the fun part of the 80s auction ;) If you want to get a guy on your team before 10 pm that is avialable (not won by anyone else on the auction site) you have to bid on him before 4 pm to win him for 10 pm, if not just make sure he is not on your team that night.

We go by trust in season because no one wants to spend all that time monitoring everyone.

clear as mud :D :D

I will start the auction Dec 26th and if we all open 6 players per day it will go pretty fast and we should be done around Jan 10th because of the clock not running on New Years weekend.

One last rule here.....The New Years weekend will be off the clock, there will be many very important players expiring that weekend so I think it is best we hold off until the monday Jan 1st. Is the 1st okay with everyone?

I will make sure all bids expiring 30th or 31st are bumped to expire on the 1st and 2nd respectively. Bidding wont be allowed on the weekend so that there is no confusion about what players should expire also.

A valid TSN roster for an 80 mil TSN cap, correct? Even though the auction dollars have a $180 mil cap.

Just to make sure again, if you own 32 players they are yours and yours only unless you drop them on the auction site? So you can add and drop them at will on TSN and no one can take them.

With only a 5% penalty at the start, having a 'minor league' will be more interesting and important than a 200x team.

I have to travel to Brazil again for a few weeks starting the 29th (back on the 14th of Jan), but will have access from the hotel at night and in the morning. Brazil is 3 hrs ahead, so that may not be an issue. However, if you think my limited access will not work then I'll bow out.

Penn,

so if we all open 6 players each day, does that mean that max 72 players are being actively bid on during each day?

I'm sure once it's up and running on your site, it will start to make sense. If we have questions, we can ask 'em then.

What if bidding on a player is started by more than one person, or can that not happen?

Is there a "draft" order, in which managers start the bidding?

I'll wait till Monday -- just thinking out loud right now.

Merry Christmas everybody.

This will be the perfect option for me when in Brazil. I can check and then think about it all day long.

We are starting on Monday...how does it start?
