What to do at 1b

What to do at 1b

Postby Halo Don » Fri Dec 23, 2005 1:49 am

Well, my team is starting to do better. I was able to pick up Freel for not much. Season is most likely lost. Already cost myself alot of $salary with some cuts.

My question is what should I do at 1B? I have Konerko and Merloni that are eligible to play there. I do have a couple of dead weight players.

Please share any ideas for my 1b situation.

You have to play Konerko full time at 1B. Looking at your splits it doesn't look like you are platooning Freel or DaVannon. Those guys should only start vs RHP. You also have too many players on your roster in general. To have as many extra players as you do dilutes your salary cap too much. You should only have 23 or 24 players IMO.

Vazquez should be good at Angels Stadium. I would try to trade Peavy for an offensive player, maybe an OF? Peavy should be very tradable to a team that is using a 5 man rotation. By doing so you will then have a 4 man rotation which frees up cap room.

I assume this is one of your first teams. If so take a look at the teams in your league that are doing well. Check out their rosters to see what makes a successful team and how their teams are built for their stadiums. The more times you play the more knowledge and experience you gain. Learn from it and success will come! 8)

Amen on Konerko. He's a full-time player.

Freel can be as well. I just would hit him last or low in the lineup vs. LH's.

1) No way Bartolo should be pitching 72 innings on this team. Ditch him.

2) Kline an expensive luxury you can't afford. Ditch him for a RH RP to complement Duchscherer.

3) Worrell & Dotel basically same - ditch Worrell for lefty specialist or reverse RH.

4) Hairston a watse of money since you have Kennedy at 2B. Ditch him & get a LF you can platoon with Davanon. I like Swisher a lot in that role despite high E rating, and his OBP not bad for when Davanon is hurt.

5) Trade Peavy if you can. You have 4 * SPs (Westbrook, Buerhle, Escobar, Vazquez) who make for a passable rotation, though Vazquez is weak. Having more than 4 * SPs makes little sense and combining 3 or 4 with a high-priced non* SP is very inefficient.

I have been trying to play Freel full time. I had moved Hairston to LF with DaVannon platooning but Hairston keeps getting hurt. Injuries keep bitting me everytime I think about cutting someone off my team. Was doing well (winning 2 of 3) last few series but got swept last night.

Is there anything I should be doing to affect HAL on the manager strategy or player card checks.

Yeah, Davanon should be avoid lefties, anyone platooning should have the avoids checked on their bad side. Manager strategy curious to know how your pen is set up, Dotel's numbers are good, and Kline horrible....pitching to too many RH....

Freel should play both ways Halo Don... superb value in this game.

He should lead-off vs LHP on your team... he has 45.5 OB chances and terrific speed (although his clutch is suspect).

Have Davanon lead off vs. RHP and Freel behind him as he has more hits and TB's than Davanon.

When considering 1B, please be aware that MERLONI IS THE #1 PLATOON 1B AVAILABLE FOR UNDER 1 MIL. (I am not that high on Konerko in this game, but I agree if you keep him you have to play him both ways, he is stronger vs. LHP anyways. Perhaps you can use Merloni to platoon at DH or 3B.)

That is all.

Thanks for all the advice. Here is what my non injury lineups look like.

vsLHP (I am weak vs LHP)
1. Freel, Ryan (R) 3B
2. Jeter, Derek (R) SS
3. Guerrero, Vladimir (R) RF
4. Rowand, Aaron (R) CF
5. Konerko, Paul (R) DH
6. Hairston Jr., Jerry (S) LF
7. Merloni, Lou (R) 1B
8. Closser, J.D. (S) C
9. Perez, Neifi (S) 2B

vsRHP
1. Davanon, Jeff (S) LF
2. Freel, Ryan (R) DH
3. Guerrero, Vladimir (R) RF
4. Rowand, Aaron (R) CF
5. Konerko, Paul (R) 1B
6. Jeter, Derek (R) SS
7. Chavez, Eric (L) 3B
8. Kennedy, Adam (L) 2B
9. Closser, J.D. (S) C

I just offered Peavy for Jose Guillen (to play LF) to a Fenway team not sure they will accept it. Looked to be the only option (1 other option for Ford,L Minute Maid team).

As for Bartolo, I can't seem to get another option here Buerhle sucks and only pitching against weak LH hitting teams in appropiate stadiums. Peavy has been my most consistant pitcher.

Kline is my LH specialist, not doing well. And Worrell the RH specialist.
