As I mentioned at the top of my accompanying "What's to come" post: this Monday, October 22, we'll be launching the preseason coverage site for our very special promotional event - the official Strat-O-Matic re-creation of the 1986 baseball season. Using the SOM Online engine, we'll be replaying the 1986 season, game by game, with 26 prominent members of the media/baseball world managing the original rosters through the original schedule. Basically, we want to see if we can repeat history, or better yet, rewrite it. What's even cooler is that we'll be covering the season as if it were 1986 all over again, with new content written by our managers, AND actual articles from the original Sporting News magazine from 1986, as if they were hot off the presses.

Here's the deal: we have one last managerial opening - the San Diego Padres - for which I'd like to invite one of YOU to fill. At this time, I'd like all of you to nominate who you think would best represent this great community in our high profile media event, as the skipper of the Padres. You may volunteer yourself, if you want.

The qualities we're looking for in this person are:

1. Familiarity with the details of the 1986 baseball season
2. Good knack for writing, especially about baseball and/or Strat-O-Matic
3. At least some spare time for the above-mentioned writing

Point #2 does not mean you or this person would have to be a published author, or a seasoned blogger - if you happen to like your nominee's casual posting style on these very forums, that's perfectly fine. We're not looking for the next Peter Gammons; we'd just like someone who would be excited to post occasional blog entries about the team and the project.

I nominate Sykes. I have no idea if he has the time or inclination for this project, but he's a stalwart BTT 80s manager (118), and has a propensity (or mad obsession) for playing in Jack Murphy stadium.

Personally, I'd like to see an 80's manager get the call. The product has been lacking a bit of love the last 2 years and having a member of this community kick some professional behind would only help generate revenue for TSN. :wink:

YF, LMB, myself and a few others would all represent well. There are a lot of great managers out here, so we will do well regardless of who wears the hat.

Even though I've played against Visick more, how can you not give Sykes the baton! 118 teams in Back to 80's! That's dedication.

The Padres cost me a ton of money in 1985 and again in 1993. Both times they beat the Mets.In '85 Lamarr Hoyt walked the bases loaded in the bottom of the 1st inning and Gary Carter swung on 3-0 hitting into a DP. Foster flied out to deep left and the Mets didn't get a runner past 1st the rest of the night. Hoyt went the distance allowing 4 hits. Gooden was the Met's pitcher so you can imagine the odds I was laying. Hoyt would be out of baseball within a year. 1993 was the 2nd year of Anthony Young's nightmarish losing streak. Archy Cianfrocco hits an 8th inning opposite field dinger and Andy Benes 1 hits the Mets and Zimharry loses big style. Additionally, I always liked "Downtown" Ollie Brown, Cito Gaston and Alan Wiggins despite his terrible fate. Consider me the Ron Paul of the applicants!!!
