Can I Compete With This Team? Corrected Link

Hi,

Well I think I've corrected many of the mistakes I made drafting and organizing my 1969 Bisons (my first online team) with my 1970's and 80's Bisons. Even my 2001 Bisons would be in first place except for five blown saves in my first 27 games by my first expensive lock down closer.

Enough of that and back to my request for help. After 69 games I stand 13 games under .500. I'm starting the easiest stretch of my schedule by far tonight. Your advice would be helpful. I know I failed to secure a good right handed power hitter. My defense is weak because I've needed to score runs with this stretch of bad pitching and my poorly thought out draft. My pitching has not performed near what I expected given my expenditures. One mistake I haven't made is falling victim to the 80% waiver penalty. I've been patient if nothing else. Your team looks pretty good, actually. Is this a DH league? I can't tell who's playing 1B for you. If it's Yaz, you're wasting his defense. Same with Kaline. Is Kirkpatrick at 1B? 3B?

You could use a bullpen stopper, but cheap lights-out guys can be hard to find in 1969. McMahon is usually better than he's been for you and he may come around. And sometimes, guys like McMahon, with no HR's on his card, are the way to go.

Use this team as a learning experience. Should you return to Tiger Stadium, look for pitchers with lower WHIPs, as you have high ballpark singles in your home stadium. Also, in a high BP single environment, defense is important. You can't give away additional hits. If you're just starting out, try stadiums that have either high BP singles or high BP HR's, not both. That way, you can tailor your players to your park a bit more.

And, yes, you could use a RH power bat. If yoou can find one out there, even a cheaper one for a platoon, like Alyea or Bubba Morton, it's worth a try. If not, just remember to find a bit more balance next time.

1969 can be a tough game. Just stick with it.

Hey John, a suggestion or two...

You aren't getting very many innings out of George Stone for the $3.27 he's costing you. I'd suggest dropping him for a $0.50 guy (be sure to use your settings so this guy never gets in the game!) and use the extra money to beef up your offense. I think you could use a right handed bopper.

Funny that Brant Alyea should be mentioned. In the most recent 1969 league that I participated in, Brant Alyea ended up playing 1B a good part of the season due to the anemic performance of Ernie Banks. Alyea's final numbers (Home - Busch Stadium) were 288 ABs, 39 runs, 8 2Bs, 15 HRs, 56 RBIs, 0.257 BA, 0.349 OBP and 0.441 SLG. If those numbers were expanded to an entire season, I think they would be very impressive for a $0.98 player. And with a 1L rating, he can be utilized against both right handers and left handers.

Alyea also played on my first 1969 team, platooned with Mincher at 1B, and occasionally playing LF when Mincher was in the lineup.

The next time I play in a '69 league, I'm giving some serious thought to playing Alyea as a regular for the entire season. I think he's one of the best bargains in the '69 game.
