New 30-team league format: opinions

Postby ArrylT » Wed Oct 17, 2007 5:24 pm

Lets assume that geekors "bump it up" proposal is in play now.

Add Team D in the equation that also had E. Renteria at #1 - like Team C.

Team B which had V. Guerrero would now be penalized because Team C, having missed out on E. Renteria, would now have V. Guerrero listed as their #1 pick.

Team C would also get to compete for A. Ramirez, again because Team C missed out on E. Renteria and everyone was bumped up.

If Team C really wanted Guerrero they should have ranked Guerrero higher - NOT miss out on Renteria and expect the bump up to give them a shot at Guerrero against owners who DID list Guerrero first.

simple solution is to let actual ranks go before bump ups.

I.e. In your example, Vlad would go to the person who really ranked him #1, and then the other person would get their #3.

AT, I'm guessing you never been like me and missed 4 of your top 5 picks, it's killer and I was trying to think of a way to alleviate that, especially in bigger formats.

As for 30 teams - I think it is a kewl option - but it would not increase the amount of teams I play. If I want to play in larger leagues, I usually join or run themes that require 24 or 36 owners.

I think 16 teams would be a better option, especially in 60-80m leagues. In fact you could make it so that

12 team leagues were for 80-100-200m leagues

and 16 team leagues were for 60-80-100m leagues ... since with more owners more salary will be used up.

I think we should have league size as an option much as we do salary cap. Could have 3/4 different sizes; 12 teams / 16 teams / 24 teams and 30 teams. this would give US more options while playing the games.

I here Bernie say that too many option scatters out interest too much, and leagues don't fill. I think 24 is the number.

As afar as drafts go in these bigger leagues, the important piece to me would be getting the next 3 day rest starter when I draft a 3 day rest guy and don't get him. rather than any starter.

I think in a 24 or 30 team league it doesn't matter if you get 3 or 4 day rest SP as every team most likely will end up with a 5 man rotation anyway due to lack of any other options.

I like the 24 team option Bernie - but think 12 should always be the default size.

I believe that your casual player will stick mainly with the 12 team league option. Your hard-core players would be more willing to jump into 24 team leagues, especially in long-term keepers and the like. I would think I'd be good for 3-5 24 team leagues per year.

that's one of the things that's wrong with MLB...the product has been diluted just to increase revenue stream...

The 12-team league preserves one of the greatest things about the game...rivalries. You build your team to compete against a certain other team...your rivals. You play your rivals many times over the course of a season. This brings out the best in a manager...not just the luck of the draft, but to manage a team against a certain type of roster that he or she will face many times over the course of a year.

But of course, there's probably decent arguments on both sides...but let's not think that everything MLB has done has been GOOD for the game...

I vote to keep things as small and intimate as possible...

Put your time and money into improving HAL, who last night played Macowiak in RF and Ruben Sierra at 3B...AGAIN!! That is what frustrates me...not the size of my league but the quality of the computer's decision-making...

Nobody has mentioned a 15 team 3 division league with a wild card spot.

If the 24 team 4 division format conains two leagues of 12 teams each that do not play each other in the regular season, that would be AWESOME. I am not a wild card fan so having the winners of the two 6 team divisions play to get to the WS would be great.

If a 30 team league is done, an idea for it may be that a "live" draft is conducted or at least a "slow live draft" via email can be done. The reason for the "slow live draft" would be that the salary cap could be elimimnated as most of the players would be used anyway.
