Mark Langston today vehemently defended himself against Keeshonds GM fitch70.

"I did NOT eat those hamburgers," said the recently acquired lefty (hopefully) staff ace. "As for the candy bars, I am pretty sure David Wells sneaked in from the 90s and took the whole kit and kaboodle."

League officials are still at a loss to explain the dearth of candy bars throughout the league, and are currently seeking wells for questioning.

In a story with absolutely no bearing on tthe previous one, GM honestiago responded to Darrell Porter's comment about the prowess of George Breet by saying, "Um...yep -- you're right." :wink:

I think Schmidt is unbelievable in 3 years, very good but vulnerable in 1 year and obviously awful in another. The 6L year can be a killer, as PanzerAce suggests. My only (I think) experience with the 6L was successful: 37 HR, 108 RBI, .255/.493/.368. I think one of the main reasons he is often on the waiver wire after the autodraft is b/c people that are willing to spend $8M+ on a 3B will spend it on Brett.

As for my pickup in the draft league, I thought it was more or less a no-brainer (I dropped a struggling Soto and Cooper for a 67% chance at an unbelievable Schmidt card), although I figured bjs had some add'l data that I didn't re: the drop. That being said, I'm not sure how much stock to put into the HAL deal. I'm not sure any of us knows why HAL does some things he does. Plus, Schmidt, even in '78, hit .267 against rightys, with a .380 OBP and .435 SLG, so I don't know why that would warrant a 9th place in the batting order even if you knew what card you had. To date, I've had decent, but mixed results - 24 ABs, 3 2B, 14 BB, .292/.417/.553, but no HRs in Cleveland Stadium. Too early to tell, but again, the cost to me was slight so I think it was/is worth the risk.

I have Schmidt in the Astrodome, so his power numbers are hurting; only 9 HR's in 220 AB's. I'm hanging onto him because of his glove, and because I believe he helps me on the road. Plus, my best hitters on that team are LH's (W Clark, Aikens, in particular) and I like having a guy who can really slam the lefties. I'm figuring he'll give me about 25 HR's before all is said and done, which, in the Astrodome is pretty good. Of course, that league is actually a pitcher's league, so I am also proceeding with the convoluted logic that that makes a true slugger even more valuable.

(I cuold be just deluding myself, though).

Related note: In a face to face league of, oh, about 20 yeras ago, a friend of mine traded his entire starting IF to my father for Mike Schmidt. We still talk about that one (that, and the time my dad had the overall #1 pick and took Brett Butler) :shock:

I'm on my second team with Schmidt.
The first time I dropped him b ecause it looked like I had his worst year and the one thing you are looking for is home runs from him'
I've held on to him this time, mostly because I needed something to hit LHPs.
I think we expect him to hit more home runs. He has 11 in 40 games for me which translates into 40 for the season. But when you've had him for 40 games, your team is struggling, 11 dingers in 40 games seems like poor production.
But 8+M is way too much for a guy who primarily just thumps LHPs.
