What to do at 1b

Postby Coffeeholic » Tue Dec 27, 2005 5:06 pm

Well, unlike Frank, I'm not a huge Drew fan. For 9.5 mil + I keep thinking he should put up better numbers.

However, you are hungry for a some lefty bats, so perhaps you could counter with Peavy, Vlad, Closser and Almanzaga for Pedro, Drew, Young and Estrada. The Closser for Estrada part would be a great bonus, but if he won't go for that, at least get Young out of the deal 'cuz it really doesn't look like he's using him much (only 33 AB's).

I agree with Play By The Rules in that you should keep Chavez. Looking at the FA list, if after you make the trade, perhaps you can free up enough cash to nab Snow to play 1B. You already have Merloni, so if someone like Ventura or Tracy is available, you'd have a nice platoon tandem to provide back-up for your injury prone positions of 1B and 3B.

btw, feel free to offer up Hairston in any trade offer!

Ok, If my trade offer gets accepted and I could cut Konerko and Hairston that would give me ~6.99M for FA.
Snow is 5.99M
Just picked up Tracy that dang Chavez is hurt again.

Dang Halo Don, couldn't get Eric Young? He would've been the perfect fit at DH w/Davanon.

Anyways, time to look at trading with the Choochoo's.

He's 40-50, so perhaps looking to make some changes. Lidge and Lilly are the 2 guys to target. He's got so much relief pitching that Lidge is overkill for him, and Lilly is not really pitching that well for him.

I'd make inquiries, offering any pitching except Pedro and Dusrocher.

Perhaps Buehrle or Escobar and Vasquez for Lilly might work for him, or perhaps he might just want to free some salary to upgrade his offense and will be willing to part with Lidge.

Coffee, You sure have been helpful. I really appreciate the advice.

He wouldn't part w/Young or Estrada. Got fed up and sent me his final offer that I accepted in Pedro and Drew for Vladdy, Peavy and Amezaga. I was starting to get hesitant because I had started wining (9 of last 15). But then got swept last night. I did send him another note sharing my interest in Young still.

Starting to work with Choochoo. I had originally (few weeks ago) tried to get Figgins from them but they wouldn't part w/him. So I pulled trigger on Freel.

You thinking pitching changes only here? I will have a challenge with $ on any trades, because I have cut way too many players so far. I have ~74.69M salary at this point. (learned a lesson here)

Part of my problem is that I missed the Waiver period because I never received an email notification that the team was drafted. So I got lucky and went to look at my team just before the season started.

As the other team involved in the trade, I wouldn't part with Young because I have him as part of a platoon vs LH pitchers where he's been pretty effective/The low AB's you saw are because I picked him up about 20 games ago, not because I wasn't playing him. This should be a good deal. Drew does a bit of everything, great OBP and D while I got the high avg. RH slugger I needed in Vlad. Pedro leads our league in HR's allowed-I don't think my park (Yankee) was a good match for him but he should do well for you in your park (Angels) which is more favorable to pitchers.

JohnnyB... it did look like you were only using Young as a back-up.

Halo Don, glad to be of assistance.

Since you have 5 SP*'s, one of them is un-necessary. The goal here is to turn two of them into an SP* who is an upgrade. ie... Vasquez and Buehlre for Lilly. Or, to take 1 SP* and match him with another player for an upgrade somewhere else. ie... Vazquez and an RP for Lidge, or Vazquez and Closser for Estrada.

One of the things that sticks out about your team is that a number of players didn't really fit Angels Stadium that well. Angel's Stadium is a borderline pitcher's park, yet your line-up was stocked with hitter's park type players (Konerko, Jeter, Chavez, etc).

Turning Konerko over for Snow is a step in the right direction. Rollins is available on the FA wire, and he is a real nice fit. but rather than just dropping Jeter, it would be nice if you shopped Jeter around for an upgrade at another position. For example, pair Jeter with Closser and try to get an upgrade at catcher. Good fits for your team would be IRod, Burke or Kendall, all guys that will provide you with the good RH bat you'll need because you've lost Jeter. Whomever else you get in the deal is ir-relevant, since he'll get dropped when you pick up Rollins. Try to lose as little salary as possible when you drop a player however, so if you pick up some more salary in a trade to work with, that's great.

Merloni is OK for now as a platoon mate with Davanon, but since your corner IF positions are so injury prone, to count on Merloni to be available as a DH on a regular basis may not be practicable. An idea here might be to turn Pods over for someone like Jay Payton, who could platoon with Davanon at DH while also offering back-up in the OF, or better yet, turn Perez into Chris Gomez who could platoon with Davanon and provide back-up at the middle IF positions.

Thanks for wheeling dealing JohnnyB. Most of the others just decline offers without any dialogue or counteroffers. It was enjoyable working out our deal.

I was able to get 30 HR out of Vladdy (in 90 games), he should hit more HR in your park. But he was very streaky. Hoping Pedro is a boost for my SP. Good luck...

Yikes Halo... better rescind that counter-offer ASAP.

You don't want to give up Snow, Freel, Buehrle or Escobar!

Lilly or Lidge would be nice, but not at the expense of gutting your team.
