Cards with Memories

Postby labratory » Fri Dec 30, 2005 9:05 am

Manny Mota 1977 was the supreme pinch hitter with an OBP of .521. Another I remember was Cliff Johnson of the same year (against LHP).

Finally, I must remember Yastrzemski's card in 1964. The card was nothing special, but it was the reason I became a lifelong Sox fan. In fact I'm wearing my Yaz T-shirt as I sit here typing.

Man, you guys are making me jealous! I never played STRAT before I discovered it here at TSN, now I'm hopelessly addicted and loving netplay as well.

Keep those stories comin! I'm drooling at the prospect of perhaps seeing some of these cards in ATGIII

Dave Valle, yes that was a CARD! '81 Schmidt was awesome too.

Not sure what year (mid-late 80s I think), but Rob Murphy or some other Reds reliever had a great card as I recall.

always liked the spacial anomaly cards. These are guys who would have never make a face to face league, except for some twist of fate. For example, Rob Piccolo made a league one strike year because he absolutely annihilated lefties. He never made a league we played in again, but for that one year, he smoke lefties with a .390 average and a .595 ob%. Couldn’t touch a righty to save his life.

Another of my favorites was Mark Langston. I think it was '89 maybe? There was not a single solitary way a LH hitter could get on base against Langston's card. And RH hitters did not have many chances either.

One great thing about the old basic side cards was how STRAT would portray all the .300+ hitters, whether they would have a one column card or a two column card etc. where all their hits would be. A favorite of mine is the 1966 Frank Robinson card it's awesome, 3-4, 3-5 and 3-6 all HOMERUN and with 49 dingers he could hit them. Playing face to face you knew he was going to get hot, and you could feel it coming!!! 1966 pirates have an awesome hitting team, as well as many other teams that year.
Trying to get Bob Veale 16 wins is tough though...

Here are some more:

King Kong Kingman '79 when he hit 48 homers (18 natural homers v. left and 15 v. right with respectable OBPs)

Bob Watson '75 (almost .500 v. lefties, but he couldn't field to save his life)

Bob Montgomery '77 (over .500 OBP v. lefties with 6 natural homers) -- one of my friends always used him as well as Oscar Gamble '79

Larry Harlow '79 (reverse lefty reserve outfielder with a .472 OBP v. lefties)

Strat Cards

Postby rschwartz51 » Sat Dec 31, 2005 8:08 pm

Memphisjohn actually named 2 that were the first 2 to come to mind. Dusty and Gates. Played all the oldtimer and H of F sets so I gave some thought.

Don Mossi - LRP stud from the SOM 1954 set. Would love to find out why he was left off. Pitched 60+ innings I think and was great.

Manny Sarmiento from the Reds in either early to mid 80's.

Victor Cruz - Another Red.

Vida Blue - 1971

Arky Vaughan - SS Boy would he get use here.

Elston Howard - C 1961.
