Ugh...help with a team

Ugh...help with a team

Postby Rant » Thu Nov 29, 2007 11:30 am

I could use some thoughts on a team about midway through the season. I'm in RFK and have hovered near or below .500 for the year. In building the team, I took some guys with ob versus 30+ hits. It could be the or one of the mistakes I made; I'm not hitting much at home. My starters have been spotty. Any thoughts on midcourse correction?

Well for one I usually only allow 2 dead spots, and on your team you have 3. Everett, Castillo and Duffy, great def, bad hitting. Good to have 2, hard to carry all 3. Pujols is underperforming, which really isn't helping at all, and Escobar has missed about half the games, also not helping.

then the bottom of your rotation is pretty weak. I usually look at Bonser as a #5, or Beckett as a #4 in a 4 man rotation, but not both as #4 and #5.

But other than that I think the team is constructed well. you're getting some bad rolls for Clemens on the road, Pujols has not lived up to snuff, and neither has Miggy really(especially at home). If you had gotten better rolls I think you would be at least fighting for a spot. I'm not sure if there is much you can do. The only thing I see (and I am not endorsing this) is drop Pujold for someone cheaper like Overbay, and use that money to upgrade a dead spot and/or a #3 SP.

Btw, one last thing, who is batting #2? It seems most of your best hitters all have high Dp's, Bard, Pujols, Miggy, the heart of your order. I'm guessing that has snuffed a few rallies as well.

I've been batting Miggy leadoff because of the dp issue. He's at least * and high ob. I thought having Pujols, Duncan, Bard, and (sometimes) Escobar might make up for that. Thought about dropping Pujols and adding Gload (Overbay's taken) and spend elsewhere or high end N. Johnson or Wes Helms and add a better starter (not crazy about anyone available at the $2-3.5M range: Patterson, Olsen, Schilling, etc.).

vr:
1. Cabrera, M. (R) 3B
2. Tucker, M. (L) RF
3. Pujols, A. (R) 1B
4. Duncan, C. (L) DH
5. Bard, J. (S) C
6. Escobar (R) LF
7. Castillo, L. (S) 2B
8. Everett (R) SS
9. Duffy, C. (L) CF

vl
1. Smith (L) 3B
2. Escobar (R) RF
3. Pujols, A. (R) 1B
4. Cabrera, M. (R) DH
5. Bard, J. (S) C
6. Denorfia (R) LF
7. Castillo, L. (S) 2B
8. Duffy, C. (L) CF
9. Everett (R) SS

Even with the high DP's, I would just have to tough it out and bat them in their typical spots.

Tucker, Bard, Miggy, Pujols, Duncan, Escobar vs R and Smith, Bard, Escobar, Pujols, Miggy vs L. Normally I would bat Escobar 2nd vs L, but might as well take the better tb's and power and put it a lil lower, but the low dp's are better with the slow Bard in front over.

A case of too little, too late, but I thought you'd be interested (geekor) in how this team finished. They kept floundering with the lineup shift, so I dumped Pujols, Beckett, and Everett and picked up Harden, Drew, and Gload. They actually worked their way back up to .500 with a 9-2 finish (28-19, I think, after the drop/adds). Helped that Escobar stayed mostly healthy and Harden was lights out.
