New 30-team league format: opinions

Postby qksilver69 » Fri Nov 09, 2007 2:13 am

1) Agree that 24-team size is the best option after 12.

2) All the other suggestions are good but don't belong here. Bernie is saying that the new league size is low-hanging fruit, so let's help him focus on getting the answer he needs from us on this issue & then bug him about the other stuff, which is important but will take more resources/work.

I like the notion of a 24 team league.

However...I do know that on an occasion, a 12 team league can take a long time to fill.

Just to be able to have a few options when designing a league or theme would be nice. :D

I would welcome this idea, this would be more interesting to play, to me more trades and more balance

I'd welcome a 24 or 30 team league, but personally, would probably not join an auto draft one unless the format for selecting your players is different. I believe having a ranking system similar to the Yahoo auto leagues would be a bit more fairer. I don't believe a 25 man draft system is feasible or fair in a 24 or 30 team. A team can easily miss out on EVERY player on the draft list, leaving nothing but slop that they most likely could not recover from. Allow the teams to rank as many players in the order desired as they want. I might not rank 300 players, but I might rank the top 150 desired to build at least half my team from.

As presently formatted, if this were done for the 06 set, if only TWO people were to rank Pujols, and no one else chose a 1st baseman under $3, one of the two would get Doug Mienkiewicz (32nd ranked 1st baseman) as their consolation prize. Without a ranking system where you get your highest ranked player at any position that has not been chosen, the 24 or 30 team league is NOT feasible.

Bernie,

Out of the people on this thread who offered an alternate format, this is what it looks like:

15 team league 2 votes
16 team league 2 votes
18 team league 1 vote
24 team league 13 votes

These are votes not people (some people voted for more than one alternate format)

BUT- What do we do about the issue Jerlins brought up? Will you be able to set up a ranking system if we have 24 teams?

Another vote for 24 team leagues.

I'd play in a 30 team league, but a 24 league format, 4-6 team divisions with no wild cards is a format I'd play as a format of choice (over 12 or 30).

[quote:7ab44fac48="the splinter"]Nobody has mentioned a 15 team 3 division league with a wild card spot.[/quote:7ab44fac48]

Who gets skipped each night with 7X2 +1 ?

The AutoDraft format in the larger leagues would probably cause me much concern, but in a Live-Draft or Long-Term Keeper League, or even an Auction league, I would welcome the challenge. There is just too much "chance" in that Auto-Draft for my taste. I do like the idea of an 18 or 24 team league though, since it would get the talent spread around. Now if HAL would just agree to do what we ask...

[quote:c32a212152="Pelzer"]I don't really care how many teams are in the leagues...I like the 1 game at a time....Yes it would take a hell of a lot longer to do a league but being able to try and get hal to do what you want would be great in a game by game scnerio.....Wouldn't it be nice to set your linups for one game at a time..That is what I want....The 24 or 30 team option definately appeals to me as I like theme leagues and this would be an awesome opportunity to do themes...But game by game is what I really crave. :D[/quote:c32a212152]

Larry, I'm glad you brought up the one game at a time option. Yes, it would take 6 months to play a season.....but we're baseball fans......we have a lot of patience. I just get tired of HAL making stupid choices over a 3 game spanse! I guess I would like to have a choice before each game to make any changes so I can match up better to a particular pitcher or have a chance to reshuffle things if a player gets hurt for an extended time.

I'm definitely for larger leagues!!!!! It's a no-brainer. I have a hard time even calling a group of 12 teams...........a "league". 12 teams is more like a "gaggle".

[size=18:c32a212152][b:c32a212152]My optimal league would be:
1. 24 team league
2. 4 divisions of 6 (12 teams in the AL and 12 in the NL)
3. NL and AL don't play each other all season until the World Series
4. 4 Playoff teams in the AL and 4 in the NL
5. The final 2 teams in the NL and the AL get a Free Credit, the two World Series teams get Two Credits. (this will keep the awards the exact same as today overall)
6. Season would be one game at a time (optional for us die-hards)
7. Since the AL wouldn't play the NL, the same owner could have an NL and an AL team in the same league. Best case scenario is that your team could meet your other team in the World Series and gain a total of 4 credits. The odds are stacked against that, but it would be fun to try and do it!![/b:c32a212152][/size:c32a212152]

I like Kev's idea...

With the exception of being able to have 2 teams in the same league...There would have to be all kinds of stipulations and rules against trading to the other team, and means of hogging players in the initial Draft...It would really complicate things and anyone with collusive ideas could have a field day and alienate more players very easily...

I think the 26-30 team format would spread the pool so thin that players who were accustomed to having teams with a lot of talent would eventually lose interest - Especially when there would only be 1 winner out of every 26-30 players...I like the challenge of it and would maybe like to use it for my own Invitational Tour, but in Day to Day Auto Drafts it could get old very fast for a lot of players...

I like the 12 team format with the option of 24 teams the best...Plus 24 is a nice even number...

So 12 and 24 for me...

Of being able to set your pitching matchups and lineups for 1 game at a time...But it could still be done in the same 3 game format. You could set your lineups for each pitcher on the same day for a 3 game set...We already have the replacemant for injured players in place...So how complicated would it be?
