NEW TEAM, NEW TO 69

Postby DHowser » Thu Dec 20, 2007 6:34 pm

ok guys, I was given this team post draft and post waivers. It's my first 69 team and I really have no idea if it's good or not. Other parks in my division are Yankee, Shibe, and Sicks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It looks pretty good to me. You may want to pick up a cheap RH power hitter to take advantage of Shibe Park, where Epstein and Stargell will lose some value. Woodie Held, if you can stomach his defense, may be a decent pickup.

I like to go very cheap at SS and use the money elsewhere, and in your case you may want to beef up your starting pitching. Also, I think Cuellar is overpriced--you may be better off with Peterson or Carlton or even Lolich, and use the money elsewhere. All in all, I'd say a decent team, but not great.

Good luck!

well, any plan B? All the guys you mentioned are gone. Thanks for the help though. Will keep trying to tweak. I think the biggest problem is that anyone who is decent is probably gone.

are any of Marichal, Koosman, or Messersmith better than Cuellar?

Suggestion

You need to change your pitching staff. While Cuellar is (obviously) good, Miller, Nagy, Romo, and Merrit are going to get shelled. I would trade Cuellar down and spread out his salary over some mid-range pitchers. Maloney? Gentry? Sutton?

there really isn't much other than those 4 big ones. It goes all the way down to Moose, Kilkenny, and Roger Nelson. Really slim pickings.

I think you have a pretty good offensive team. I agree on your pitching staff. I would drop Cuellar and consider an all non dot 5 man rotation. Moose is good. Consider 5 starters, and 4 higher priced relievers for a nine man pitching staff which you can use in the 69 game! Tatum is great. Put him as setup / closer / slow hook. With the money you save, upgrade at catcher if possible. Also, not a huge fan of Epstein. Always seems to underperform i.m.o. Horton and Reese are nice values @ 1B. If there are any other top sluggers available, try to fit them in your lineup. Best of luck and have fun with your first team!

I've had very good luck with Moose, and Kilkenny has been either very good or very bad for me.

Bottom line, though, I agree with the other posters--your starters will get pasted.

Other "sleepers" I've had good luck with--Dick Kelley, Jim Rooker, Dick Selma, Gary Waslewski, Steve Renko, Stan Williams, Nolan Ryan, Tom Griffin, Luke Walker.

Edit--Just peeked at your team again and I see you picked up Moose, Kelley, Selma. Good picks. You may want to consider going with 9 pitchers, like one of the other guys recommended. I do it all the time. Use the money elsewhere.

At catcher--any of the following available? Grote, Sanguillen, Corrales, Munson. Edwards is a good backup, I'd keep him and try to get one of these 4 guys. Even Ellie Rodriguez over Phil Roof.
