Is there any interest in an 80s auction league?

 Aaaaarrgghh! Is it really necessary to overbid someone 2 minutes before they expire??

Oh well! Now that I have all this money freed up, I'll have to screw someone else's pick. :D

The way people are bidding it's going to be several days before this auction is over.

Thanks to people waiting 23 hours between bids.

There's just too much money out there. We've got to put out bigger bids. I have to hold off a little in order to try for two top players and it's, at least for me, a difficult juggling act. :? I can't even keep track of what round it is in the live draft.

To be honest, the $180m limit is too high. I've down a bunch of auctions in the past, and it was always $160m. That seemed a better number, since it forced people to back off the bigger names late in the auction. Now we have several managers lurking about with plenty of cash. :?

Partially sorry about that. Seriously. I've got some holes and the torpedos I've been taking here and there aren't helping me. Everyone's been a victim though. Let's call it a party! :D

I made a few mistakes during my draft and now I've got to pay for it at the end. No I don't have a valid team and I won't have one until I have at least 15 position players. That's the bottom line. I've got 11 position players and 4 that I've placed bids on.

I know how much I want to spend and on who. I also have a plan B, a plan C, and even a plan D. But I can't put it all out there because the timing thing with the expiration dates come back to bite me as much as everyone else. I've already missed some players I really wanted early on because I put it all out there to the max (bids) only to have someone torpedo me in the final hour. Meanwhile an alternative player was won by someone else the hour before.

It's all strategy and I'm game for it but I won't make the same mistake twice. (If I can help it.)

There are some that have valid rosters that are still bidding but that's their right so no worries. But I didn't save all this money at the end so that I'd walk away with peanuts either.

But I am sorry about holding this up at the end. It's my first auction and now that I have a feel for it, I know what not to do next time to make it such a chore at the end.

Penn,

is there a cutoff as to when we can "Open" our last players? We're not on a deadline date with that are we?

It's ok, BJ. I understand the strategy of it all. I know I frustrated people in the 1 other auction I was in. But when someone waits until literally the last minute to make the bid, it seems like it's done more to screw the other guy than for any strategy.

I posted out of frustration. I kept looking at the player I wanted all afternoon to make sure I still had the top bid. I looked about 3 minutes before he was to expire and I assumed the next time I saw him, he would be be among my closed bids, only to see him at the bottom of the outstanding bids list.

It seemed like it was done just to piss me off (tho, I know it wasn't). But all is fair in auctions and war.

Just a reminder to make sure everyone has a legitimate roster. 15 position players, two have to be catchers, and 10 pitchers, 5 must be able to start, 5 must be able to relieve.

As far as torpedoing others, I never consciously set out to do so. If so, YF would not have gotten Steady Eddie for "only $17 mil". You have to look at the entire context. When a player you are bidding on with lots of dollars (George Brett 30 mil plus) is suddenly bid up beyond your means to pay for him, then you've suddenly got lots of excess cash to use to fill holes. And my roster sucks right now, no real sticks outside of Mattingly and Hojo. I don't know if I sank anyone's bids or not, but I sure would like to put a competitve team out there, especially considering many of the creme de la creme in 80s Strat is in this auction.
I suppose in the future, Penn and Big are correct, we need to limit the dollars to 160 mil.

And yeah, I'm lurking out there with big dollars to spend, although I didn't seek to do so. My love affair with the Pine Tar man blinded me to other needs on my team, I need to address that now or suffer a 90 loss season.

Just one man's take on this great process. :D
