Need 2 More for an Auction... 2007 style!

Postby Coffeeholic » Sun Dec 30, 2007 7:56 am

Long before Penngray set up his auction site, we use to run auctions on the boards.

It takes some extra work, and a bit of patience, but it can be done.

I've got quite a bit of time during the day to monitor things, so if there's some one (or two, or three) who can keep an eye on things during the evenings, then maybe we could give it a try?

Some experience with auctions would be a plus here, but a newbie or two (with auctions) would be OK also.

Actually, I'd like details. Auctions are fun if they don't last FOREVER. I'm assuming 200 mil, what are the details? I've done auctions in fantasy leagues before.

love auctions, though ive only ever done one on penngray's sight. can't imagine how to do it on thread. up for getting crushed by coffee again, and more than willing to help out and in evenings since im on the west coast, and free or at the computer most of the day. PLEASE do NOT sign up unless you've got alot of free time, or are reliable to check in frequently, and available by phone or email if you'll be away. 8-)

I was in both the first 2 auctions using the boards, and Penn's site was extremely much much better.

First thing is we used the defunct SOM football threads back then and had a separate thread for every player. Maybe use Fantasim boards for the same thing?

Very hard to do If only using 1 thread, too much cross over. also I think the first one took like 2 months!!

Perhaps if you use a 12 hour clock instead of 24??

Wow geekor! Two months,huh?

I'd have to think we could get it done quicker than that to make it worthwhile. Penn's site was usually good for about 2 weeks. I was thinking that we could probably get it done on the boards in under 3?

I was thinking that we could use 1 thread, with lot's of "copy and paste".

Say something like:

[b:c141262202]Coffee[/b:c141262202]: 5 bids - $22.3 mil

O. Vizquel - $12.5 (Sun 10:15 pm); A.Heilman - $3.5 mil (Sun 10:15pm; J. Beimel - $1.8 mil (Sun 10:15 pm); Jose Cruz - $2.5 mil (Sunday 10;15pm); M. Lieberthal - $2.0 mil (Sunday 10:15pm)

[b:c141262202]Next Manager[/b:c141262202]

[b:c141262202]Next Manager[/b:c141262202]

[b:c141262202]Next Manager[/b:c141262202]

etc, etc....

Each time a manager makes a bid, he would just "copy", "paste", then make alterations to the list as needed, then "submit".

Or, perhaps list bids in chronological order, those ending first at the top of the list:

[b:573920ff42]O. Vizquel[/b:573920ff42] - $10.5 mil - Coffee - Sunday 1:00pm
[b:573920ff42]J. Beimel[/b:573920ff42] - $3.5 mil - Coffee - Sunday 1:15pm
[b:573920ff42]Ichiro[/b:573920ff42] - $12.6 mil - Geekor - Sunday 2:10pm

etc, etc

When a new bid is made, that player would then go to the bottom of the chronological list (again using "copy and paste").

SOM auctions revolve around the basis of a player being won by the "High Bidder" after a bid goes unchallenged for 24 hours.

Each manager is given $160 mil in "bidding" money to use on 33 players and/or stadiums (a manager can't have more than 33 "open" or "won bids at any time). This $160 mil in bidding money is used to secure a standard $80 mil DH league team.

So for example, I bid $15 mil on O. Vizquel on Sunday at 2:00pm. If no other managers raises my bid on Omar before Monday at 2:00pm, then I win Omar.

There are some other rules as well, but that's the basis of how these things run.

Bottom line is that these do take some time to complete, so they are not well suited to impatient managers, and you will need to be very committed to it's completetion if you sign on?

That said, however, auctions probably don't require the constant monitoring that a live draft does. A manager will have to make sure to check in at least once every 24 hours, but after that, the frequency with which a manger checks in is up to him (although I would say that those who can check in more frequently will probably fare better).
