As far as usage is concerned.

Are the managers allowed to play whomever they want as much as they want? How about picthers?

I see that trades are allowed (that Juilo Franco trade was awesome for the Yanks)

PS/ also, what happens to guys that were traded mid-year in 1986 do they play for both teams?

Use them any way they want to.

Not sure about the mid year guys.....originally said they would be traded when traded but that was when trades were not allowed so not sure that holds true anymore.
