HELP ... Suggestions needed for this UNDERPERFORMING team!

Postby egvrich » Thu Jan 12, 2006 8:28 am

This team has been a major disappointment for me thus far, they still have a winning record, but they're 8th in the league in scoring even though they're playing in the Polo Grounds .........

http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/baseball/stratomatic/atg2/team/team_other.html?user_id=94086

Listen to these stats:

4th in the league in Runs allowew
3rd in the league in Fielding %
2nd in the league in Double Plays turned
3rd in the league in Outfield Assists
4th in the league in Stolen Bases allowed

That sounds to me like a pretty solid defensive team. Obviously they simply aren't scoring enough runs and I can't figure out why??????

Any suggestions?????

Here's how I'm batting them currently:

Lineup vs. LHP

1. Pesky, Johnny (L) SS
2. Doby, Larry (L) CF
3. Simmons, Al (R) inj LF
4. Boyer, Ken (R) 3B
5. Barfield, Jesse (R) RF
6. Doerr, Bobby (R) 2B
7. Parrish, Lance (R) C
8. Cooper, Cecil (L) 1B
9. Pitcher P

Lineup vs. RHP

1. Pesky, Johnny (L) SS
2. Doby, Larry (L) CF
3. Simmons, Al (R) inj LF
4. Cooper, Cecil (L) 1B
5. Boyer, Ken (R) 3B
6. Barfield, Jesse (R) RF
7. Doerr, Bobby (R) 2B
8. Parrish, Lance (R) C
9. Pitcher P

I'm open to suggestions, questions, comments, etc. Thanks!

Coach,

OBP is killing you. Any FA/trade possibilities for 2b/rf?

Coach,

I see 1 option in the pool that could help. You could downgrade 1 of your pitchers (Vuckovich, Bagby, Jr. & Rommell are among the FA options), drop Barfield & replace him with C. Jones. Bat Jones at the top of the order & slide Doby downward to 6-7.

Thanks Randy. I'll take a look at those two options. Barfield is kind of an experiment, so I'd prefer to hang on to him if I can (plus, he's doing O.K.). I'll look at an upgrade for Doerr for sure.

Sorry, but your team may be right on target, here are some thoughts:

1. Rs vs RA, 406 vs 402, about a 500 team

2. AB 8 SLG * OBP = RS. You shoud have scored about 425 runs, you scored 406, so about 20 runs behind.

3. Over/under performance. You SPs are doing great, hitters are about normal except Simmons who should be a bit higher.

4. Lineup numbers:

OBP vs RH 0.354
SLG vs RH 0.471
OPS vs RH 0.825
HR Rate vs RH 3.7
BPHR vs RH 45
OBP vs LH 0.369
SLG vs LH 0.410
OPS vs LH 0.779
HR Rate vs LH 2.5
BPHR vs LH 27

The teams low OBP and power drop vs LH are a problem. Your actual numbers vs LH are a bit higher than expected, Coop and Parrish are over performing vs LHs, this may not hold.

Cleon would be a good choice, lead him off.

I'm looking long and hard at Buford to replace Doerr, but his defense does scare me more than a little.

I would keep Doerr, Buford would drive your ERA up by 1/2 a point, that is the only thing holding you above 500.

SteveAmes is the master of this approach, (HRs, decent pitching, low OBP, good D in Polo) but you need much higher HR rate to offset the low OBP, you need to average 2 HRs per game for it to work. I did it once, another team underway, here is the team.
