For Stats Guys

In 1987, boggs slugged for .586, so he slugged quite well indeed!!!

(and yes, he dominated the league)

I rather meant the other Boggs--the hitter with not much slugging.

But I would be pretty sure that OPS does a better job than your own formula, which appears to me highly skewed vs slugging and walk.

So which is the best formula to rate the strato cards? Something relatively simple hopefully for those of us without much time. I have played with some figures but don't know which ones best to use in analysing each card. Some say OB*TB.

Any idea?

the best way to rate strato cards is with the sheer numbers using the ratings disk.....then build your lineup on what you need in the batting order such as leadoff OB+a lil speed , then OB with low GDP, then best hitter, then the power hitter there are a few threads about where to palce somone in a lineup...and i usually use that and the ratings disk to make a lineup. If you don't have the luxary of the disk...than you could use the formulas here but they wont be entirely accurate

as for rating ballplayers with a simple formula that does not use weights it would appear OB*SLG is the easiest and best although with correlations according to lucky 1.2(OB)(SLG) is the best

Myself i am still trying to grasp a concept i think the general public could latch onto as I do not think they will ever put RC/27 on the back of a baseball card

Thanks for the great thread/discussion guys. I think I will use RC/27 vs L & vs R for my 2005 (season) teams.

[quote:2e0fe6c829]Myself i am still trying to grasp a concept i think the general public could latch onto[/quote:2e0fe6c829]The public has latched on to OPS already. They already knew what OBP was. They already knew what SLG was. It made sense to them that adding them together would pretty much describe everything a hitter does. They now know the standards for OPS -- 600 is bad, 800 is good, 1000 is great, etc. -- and they buy that it's an accurate stat. They have no clue what the standards for TA are -- in other words, what the stat actually means -- and what would the point of teaching them be, when TA doesn't summarize offense as well as OPS?
