On the Subject of Tough Divisions

Our Mystery Card games - The '70s Game, Back to the '80s, Back to the '90s

I was in that league with abnerdoubleday and I am the Gems in Outta Leftfield's league. That got me thinking I always seem to be in tough divisions.
Six completed leagues and 1 current. 2058 wins and 1674 losses as a division. Thats a .551 winning%

QUIT PICKING ON ME!!!!!! [/b]

How about this one...

Baseball Club....Abner Doubleday 108/54
Stratzillas..............................Me 93/69
Seasons Greetings...................? 93/69
Spartans.................................? 69/93

OK...the Spartans screwed up, but check the competition in my division. I won the wild-card on the 2nd tie-breaker!! Then won the championship from Abner's 108 win team. It was incredible.

Here is a league that just got over. I was third, and I thought I had one of my strongest teams.

EAST W L PCT GB HOME ROAD RS RA
Elmer Fudds 96 66 .593 - 48-33 48-33 954 835
Milford Mashers 95 67 .586 1.0 48-33 47-34 1002 796
Grand Rapids Chiefs VI 89 73 .549 7.0 50-31 39-42 941 818
Massachusetts Midnight Riders 70 92 .432 26.0 40-41 30-51 799 942

Now the riders were out of it quickly, but I would have made the playoffs in any of the other divisions.

Tough Division still tough

Postby Outta Leftfield » Sun Jan 15, 2006 2:56 pm

The tough division I was talking about at the start of this thread remains very tough. At game 144, despite having what I think is my best team ever (Cats2), with a .632 WL percentage, I'm still in a tough race for the division and not 100% sure of making the playoffs. Here's the division.

[code:1:c5daa8a827]
Cats2 91 53 .632 -
Grave-s3 89 55 .618 2.0
Gems 84 60 .583 7.0
Crast-ters 69 75 .479 22.0
[/code:1:c5daa8a827]
The Pro Crastinaters were .528 before intra-divisional play, but have since taken it on the chin (going 4-17 mostly against the division, head to head). Although I've got a 7 game lead in the wildcard with 18 to go I'm not feeling very secure because any one of the top three teams is capable of a sweep at any time.

Since we've now played 54 games within the division and 90 outside, and because therefore the math is fairly easy, I decided to figure the division's w/l pct against the rest of the league. If my math is right, the division as a whole has played 360 games vs. the rest of the league and won 225 games (45 over .500) for a wl/pct of .625. I would call that dominance. It will be tough on whoever doesn't make the playoffs, since all three of the top teams are outstanding.

More tough divisions/leagues.

Postby bjs73 » Sun Jan 15, 2006 5:45 pm

I've got a couple of tough divisions going and they're coming towards the finish line right now:

[code:1:e398ee491f]West Division Standings
Team W L Pct GB
Batmen 84 60 .583 - (Me)
Neophytes 82 62 .569 2.0 (Arryl T.)
Beulahs 45 78 66 .542 6.0 (T. Rich.)
Calculators 64 80 .444 20.0 (albert2b)
[/code:1:e398ee491f]

As always with the "Friendly Rivalry Leagues" the competition is tough. Just the other day, the Neophytes and I were tied and the Beulahs were much closer than 6 games out. My current record is currently tied for the league's best record, so it is looking like the the Wild Card could come out of the division. The ever crafty and dangerous albert2b is poised to play spoiler as we are on our way through the final stretch.

Perhaps, though the real story is what is happening in the Central of this league:

[code:1:e398ee491f]CENTRAL W L PCT GB HOME ROAD RS RA Trade
CPD Blue Gloryhounds 77 67 .535 - 36-36 41-31 705 687 Offer Trade
YountFan's Stupidity 77 67 .535 - 42-30 35-37 808 631 Offer Trade
It's All Ball Bearings 63 81 .438 14.0 35-37 28-44 778 872 Offer Trade
Itasca Ice Cubes 62 82 .431 15.0 36-36 26-46 711 807 Offer Trade
[/code:1:e398ee491f]

YountFan's run differential is clearly the top of the class in the whole league. Just last week, the Gloryhounds were 6 games out of 1st place. As of last night, the Gloryhounds have sealed the gap and it looks quite exciting for the rest of the season.

*****

Another league involves Sykes' experiment with the .75 pitching crew:

[code:1:e398ee491f]Team W L Pct GB
Nerf Herders 75 48 .610 - (me)
75 Cent Arms 74 49 .602 1.0 (Sykes)
Ashes 70 53 .569 5.0 (Martin Turner)
Pillpop 03 44 79 .358 31.0
[/code:1:e398ee491f]

This league is desperate for good pitching. The league's best team ERA is 4.18. As you can imagine, Sykes' squad has been bashing the ball and has gotten a very decent run on some cheap pitchers. He ranks 4th overall in pitching.

The Ashes have a very good squad. The only problem that the Ashes have is that all three of us went on a winning surge at the same time. We're the only teams with 70 wins or more at game 123.

Jimmy_C's is a an unusually good league division. I just did the math and his division posted a .608 w/l pct. vs the rest of the league. Still, my current league is even better, going .625 vs the rest of the league. I still find that figure pretty amazing, though I'm sure it's not the best ever.

If anyone's interest, I can explain how you can figure out a division's w/l pct against the rest of the league--it's not hard.
