PETCO line-up.... Help please!

Postby tersignf » Tue Jan 17, 2006 9:55 pm

Of course it all depends on your div mates' lineups...nothing is absolute. And I'm certainly not saying Gobble is in the rotation--just has a place as a value guy in that 10th pitcher slot, along with Halsey, Capuano, et al

Here's a team that went to the finals. I don't recommend Izzy in the pen but I had to make a midseason deal that included Foulke--who was doing awesome. I also made some moves heading into the final few weeks of div play to take advantage of opponent weaknesses as it was a tight race. Also had some injuries to pitchers that was killing me.
I would only go after folks like Berkman and Drew under very special circumstances at Petco--they're not really a good fit--but I had a SHea in my div and they were better on my team than theirs...

Did Pete Munro get a start before Schilling or Glavine????? Heresy!
They need to start the max number of times if they're on your staff--pencil em in and let em rip.
Javy Vazquez is another good one...
Also may want to check your bullpen settings--you need your higher priced guys getting innings--not the cheaper crumbs. How are you using Aquino? Not real fond of him. Still 21 OBs vs LHBs and if you want him closing you want more like the 15 range at most--even though they're only walks. Either way, Aquina needs more innings than the other guys, far and away. Again--not a great choice in this situation but don't drop folks.

Thanks again for the advice. Unfortunately, its a little too late to make changes. Yes, I started Munro ahead of Schilling in Wrigley and he threw 5 shutout innings. Not a single LHB in that line-up, so I thought throwing Munro would work and go figure that was the only game I won. I definitely overspent on pitching, but this is only my 2nd team, so I'll chalk it up as a learning experience and hopefully will do better next time.

I did have "don't use before the 8th inning" checked. I guess I should change that. If Aquino is not a good fit, wouldn't I be better off dropping him for someone else that would work better?

bravefalcon7,

having a lot of experience using petco, my advice (for the future) is to not spend so much on pitching, petco favors pitchers so the cheaper ones can do well, below is a link to a team I just started to give you an idea of what I mean

not all cheap pitchers are worthy, I look for ones that allow more singles and walks than extra base hits

good advice milezd.

I myself am trying to win a championship at Petco and will no longer waste money on the likes of Gordon, etc. and go for offence.

bravefalcon, pitchers that did well for me in the past in Petco are guys like Eaton, Sheets, Cotts, etc.

I would also like to add that good defense will only help your cheap pitchers more, most important players to get good defense are

shortstop
centerfield
second base

these 3 positions get more error chances than any other, so the lower the range the better, as for e rating, you can use this as a guide

shortstop - range rating is king
1ss34 = 2e7, better than any other rating
1ss54 = 2ss29 = 3ss4, better than any other rating
1ss84 = 2ss60 = 3ss38 = 4ss10, better than any other rating

secondbase - range rating is dominant, each step in range is worth ~ 15 in error rating
1e20 = 2e4 which is better than any 3 or 4
1e27 = 2e12 which is better than any 3 or 4
1e36 = 2e20 = 3e4 which is better than any 4

centerfield - range rating is dominant
1e10 = 2e0 which is better than any 3 or 4
1e15 = 2e5 which is still better than any 3 or 4
1e22 = 2e12 = 3e1 which is better than any 4
2e18 = 3e6 which is still better than any 4
2e25 = 3e12 which again is better than any 4
3e20 = 4e0
3e25 = 4e5

the other positions are not as drastic

third base - change in fielding rating of one is balanced off by a change in error rating of about 7
1e12 = 2e5 which is better than any 3 or 4
1e20 = 2e13 = 3e5 which is better than any 4
1e30 = 2e24 = 3e17 = 4e9
1e35 = 2e29 = 3e22 = 4e14

first base - a change of one in fielding is equal to a change of 5 or 6 in error rating
1e6 = 2e0 which is better than any 3 or 4
1e12 = 2e7 = 3e1 which is better than any 4
1e18 = 2e13 = 3e8 = 4e2
1e25 = 2e20 = 3e16 = 4e10
1e30 = 2e26 = 3e21 = 4e16

left and right field - here there is a narrower range of error ratings, with a change of one in fielding equivalent to about 6 or 7 errors when you step from a '1' fielder to a '2', about 8 errors when you move from a '2' to a '3', and about 12 or 13 errors when you move from a '3' to a '4'
1e7 = 2e0 which is better than any 3 or 4
1e12 = 2e5 which is still better than any 3 or 4
1e17 = 2e11 = 3e2 which is better than any 4
1e22 = 2e16 = 3e8 which is still better than any 4
2e22 = 3e15 = 4e2
3e22 = 4e10

I did not come up with this info, I found it online, these numbers are not 100% set in stone and are more as a guide to understanding the differences

I've heard that about the only 2Bman with a 3 rating that people will use is Loretta for his offence. Is that right?

That looks like a great line-up, Milezd. I tried to get a number of those players, but the autodraft was unkind and it left me scrambling. I will try to make some trades, but I may be forced to reconfigure to an 80% team about a 1/3 of the way through. Everyone says don't dismantle, but the New England team made some wholesale changes early in the last league that you and I were in (then made a trade) and he ended up going to the 7th game of the finals.

It may not be so much that you shouldn't drop players...but when you do you have to get the best potential for the money you have left. If you know what I mean.
