What part of 'mop-up' does HAL not understand?

After watching Ted Wilks generate twice as many innings as any other RP (Frock, McEnaney, Taylor, Aguilera) and with poor results on a Forbes team, after 63 games I selected "mop-up" on his card yesterday.
So, who pitched last night for 3 innings and gave up 6 runs and lost a game?
Tied 1-1 after eight, HAL brings Wilks in to relieve, and he gives up 2 to lose 3-1.
Next game, down 3-1 entering the eighth, HAL brings Wilks in and he gives up 4 runs. Lose 7-3, loss to Carlton.

If that is mop-up, no wonder I can never get my "closer" (not on this team) to be THE closer, unless his last name begins with e-c-k....

I've never gotten mop-up to work. It seems to mean bring in at an inopportune time. So I have not used that setting in over 40 teams.

Clearly, mop up refers to soaking up as many losses and blown saves as possible.

I have found that setting any pitcher as mop up means he will get all innings that are not setup or close innings and will easily lead your bullpen in innings pitched .......... HMMMMMMM, that gives me an idea .......... What if you take your best reliever and set him to mop up????? That might just confuse HAL enough to work!

I thought it meant to use him in the ninth inning of a one run game in the FIRST game of the season (yep had it happen). All part of the reason I am down to two teams here. Just tired of fighting Hal.

I was ready to write a follow-up today, but Lonborg, Drysdale and Scott threw back-to-back-to-back complete games.
Now THERE is a way to avoid the bullpen problems altogether!!!! :D

Well Chief, I think that's something I will definitely do with my next hopeless squad dangerously flirting with a 70 win season..... ;)

That and setting only my closer as mop-up.....

In my current league I have Doug Sisk set for: mop up, avoid lefties, quick hook and pitch batting practice only.

I have had these settings on all year and he leads my team in saves with Gossage, Lamp and Morgan as my other relievers.

He is also 3-9.

I am very annoyed as I am 2 games out of first with 12 games left.
