Adding offdays in season to allow SP flexibility?

Adding offdays in season to allow SP flexibility?

Postby GlenBrummer » Fri May 02, 2008 10:14 pm

I posted the following suggestion in the suggestions section. Curious what you all think:

The 162 game schedule with no days off inhibits the ability of managers to move SPs around so that certain starters start against certain teams. In this way, SOM does not mirror real baseball. Adding say 10 offdays to a season would allow us to jigger our staffs so that we can start certain starters again certain teams.

Of course, having an extra starter or adept use of 5 starters with a couple of *SPs allow some flexibility but its more limited.

I find that most managerial input occurs during the draft with a little tinkering for injuries, maybe substituting a player for an unbalanced starter or changing steal etc ratings based on catcher. But for the most part, there is little skill after the season starts imo.

This could add a new wrinkle which would increase our managerial input.

The off day of course could be imaginary and would not require adding any actual calendar days to the season.

Your idea is not a bad one, and I would not have any problems if they changed the format. However if you say that no off days are not realistic than you have to say that a four man rotation is not really realistic. But your idea still has merit.

Yep 4 day starters are not realistic. But realism in either situation doesn't bother me.

What I'm looking for is something to add some more managerial skill in season. I am new to TSN online but not to SOM. I have built 19 teams since February. LOVE the draft but find the season kind of boring.

I mean you read the prior night's results but its no more participatory than reading your home MLB team recap. It just seems that some things should be added to add decisions and participation during the season.

This is simple and requires I suspect almost no programming on TSN's part.

What you write is true. That is why we are so compelled to keep creating teams. And then sit back and watch them either crash and burn(like most of my teams)or make the playoffs. Either way I do understand your point. But it is hard to make anything perfect, and they(TSN and Bernie) are coming close!

Days off and more

It's true that we function more as GMs than managers. Fantasim calls for more day-to-day involvement (although it is still mostly at the GM level) and it will drive you crazy. I'm still waiting for a game that will let my catcher steal home.
I'm sure Bernie et. al. will help the games evolve.

If you haven't already, you should try a 70s or 80s mystery card team. Things are just getting warmed up when the season starts. Every series you are trying to evaluate whether each of your players has a good year or a bad year.

It does have its own frustrations. For example, my very first 70s team I wanted to build my team around Mike Schmidt. In the opening series, he got injured and I was able to determine I had his worst year. I couldn't really complain though; how lucky I was to find out so soon!

You have just given Glen the best idea yet. I too have played both 70s, and 80s mystery leagues, and they are no joke. I found them very difficult. You have too stay on your game, and read EVERY box score. I have only played each league once. Sometime in the future I plan on giving them another try.

If you implement off days into the schedule you would have to drop the * rating on all SP. You would still pitch some of your pitchers more often than others which is sort of what we already have with the SP and *SP difference.

The reason that the 4 man rotation IS realistic in this game is because there are no off-days. If we had off days and *SP you could have your best *SP pitch in a game, have an off day and then after two more games he would pitch again. You can't have both.

And oh by the way.....The mystery card games are the best! It keeps you on your toes during the entire season rather than draft and set your teams and be a spectator the rest of the season. That is a generalization but you get my point.

The mystery card games (70s and 80s) allows you to be both the manager and GM throughout the season. While a game like the 86 set, I can draft my team, set my basic settings, and never check them throughout the season and still win 100 games. In the mystery card games that will never happen, as there will be 20% of the players with their worst, 20% with there second worst, etc., and there is almost no player with either 5 good or 5 equal seasons. Especially, through the first 1/4 and 1/2 (when the waiver penalty goes up) of the season, I find you have to read every box score carefully and evaluate every single player on your team every single day (at least until it is obvious which season or seasons you have). You hope by 1/4 mark to have most of your team set, and by 1/2 to have (almost) all your team set, but it is a daily evaluation process getting there and you will have often restructured your team several times.

Depends on league

Postby elpasopesos » Sun May 04, 2008 9:44 pm

I dont find the current league boring at all. There are a group of guys who regularly chat plus try not playing more than one team at a time... you will find yourself participating more and proposing trades.
