Newbie questions Overusage

Postby larball18 » Thu May 08, 2008 4:56 pm

Brand new to Sporting News SOM Baseball. Tried out the free 1986 Season, and my league is wrapping up. I've enjoyed it; will likely try ATG next. Wanted some feedback on player usage.

The rules state no usage limits for hitters or pitchers. This leads to wacko stats: Dan Pasqua hitting 40 HR in 547 AB, when he had 16 HR & 280 AB in the actual 1986 season. Kent Tekulve pitching 187 innings vs. 110 in real life.

Wouldn't it be better to apply some overusage rules? Maybe I've missed this topic in previous posts. Any feedback from Sporting News on this issue?

I guess this is a case where you need to use the rules to your advantage, and draft some low AB hitters and low IP pitchers with the potential to put up great numbers when used a lot.

Thanks for link -- very enlightening. I can see the arguments both ways. I'll have to find a "Woodie Helm" in the next league I enter.

Was so intrigued by all the Helm references, I popped over to baseball-reference.com. He had some solid seasons in the 60s. Even played 2 seasons for my hometown Orioles.

If Woodie can smack 46 dingers in a simulated SOM season, I say more power to him.
