Great player but has missed an average of 35 games the past four years. Talk to me at the end of the season. Not as good as my favorite Brave of old, Dale Murphy, and will likely not come close to sniffing the hall but has had a great career

Dale Murphy and his coach Jack Dunn when they both were at Portland State held a week long camp at Alpenrose Dairy Farm (where the Little League Softball World Series has been held) which I attended twice was a great time. Dale Murphy was a great player and a very nice man. Jack Dunn was a great man of baseball and a great manager. 1972 -73 I think. Great CF with his bat and glove. Little League. :D I played for Coach Owens and our team was General Spray Service. That was the best time I ever had playing baseball. What a great time that was. 8-)

As a life long Braves fan I have to agree with the statements concerning Murphh ...with the exception of him being better than Chipper. Chipper may have come up lame(in health) the last few years but Dale came up lame(in performance) the first few years of his career and the last few as well. Murph had one of the best 6 year runs of all time. 2 MVP's, 30-30 man, GG's in 2 positions etc. Great man...good player.

Chipper has surpassed Murph in every meaningful offensive stat in the Braves books. He has been a stud from day 1(remember he lost his first year due to injury). Should have won ROY over Nomo. A career .300 hitter he has a MVP and several WS appearences. He is getting better as he gets older. The lost first season and the injuries of late will keep him from 3,000 hits but look for Chipper to reach 500 HR with 1700+RBI and the HOF. An improved and still improving person...a great player.

Chipper said before the season started that hig goal was to play in 150 games. So far he has played in 32 out of 34 games which projects to playing in 152 games. Hope he plays in that many and belts lots and lots and lots of homeruns!!!!! He is 1 of my 13 players in a homerun pool. 8-)

Contrary to one of the previous posters, I'd say that Chipper is a good bet for the Hall and with two or three more good seasons he will be a lock. He's got a shot at 500 homers for his career and is closing in on the top 3 for homers as a third baseman. He's already #1 in OPS for third sackers and is one of 25 players in history with career .300+ average / .400+ OBA / .500+ SLG. The fact that he's done this as a switch hitter only adds to his candidacy.

I stand corrected and you are right. I misread read his stats on the Baseball reference.com Hall monitor. He right now stands at a score of 58, which 50 is the average for a hall of famer, so his chances are better than 50/50 he will eventually make it if he continues his current hitting pace. As unfair as it is, 500 homeruns is still the standard for Hall certainty, except for obviously the steroid boys, so we will see. His lack of Gold Gloves and All-star appearances are offset by his hiting. He pales to Dawson in those categories who I think should be a hall-of-famer.
Of course a lot of baseball writers are idiots and his growing up in the steroid era may taint him.
