tandem closer

tandem closer

Has anyone had much luck with using Chad Cordero and Trevor Hoffman as a closer platoon? On paper it looks feasible but I just don't have much confidence that HAL will implement it effectively.

Also, Given a choice between Wainwright and Billingsley who would you take? My home park is PNC but two of the other parks in my division are geared towards righties: Camden, Fenway and RFK.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I haven't used a tandem closer for a while, but it might work. HAL leaves hard righty and hard lefty relievers in too long for my taste. But Cordero/Hoffman don't seem like a particularly good fit for your park. I'd look for some higher bphr risk on the right side and a card slanted slightly left.

Billingsley vs. Wainwright: Billingsley is the better fit in your park unless you see a lot of lefties.

Not a lot of lefties in my division but the Western division is loaded with them.

I exchanged Cordero and Hoffman for Street, figuring that if I need a lefty closer on occasion I can use CJ Wilson.

I like Street better, but those homers against lefties in your park may come back to haunt you. Actually looking at your pitchers you have pretty much all hard left and righties. If there aren't any other closers better suited, I'd think about looking for better set up men and go cheap with the closer. Wilson gives up a lot of OB, but if it means you can afford an inning-eating good reliever, I might take a chance. I've been wrong before though ....

Otsuka and Gregg are available and seem to be better suited for my park, but not so much my division. It's still before the season starts so their rosters could change but the other teams in the division don't have many lefty hitters. However, they are loaded with right-handed power - ARod, Hanley, Wright, Burrell, Holliday, Upton, etc, etc. That's the only reason I'm entertaining the idea of Street as my closer.

Another option would be to dump Street, Wilson, Geary and Kuo to get Isringhausen and 3 .50 relievers but that seems more extreme than what I have.

Am I better off with Otsuka and lefty righty guy like Taschner than with Street and Wilson?

I am using a Todd Worrell/Willie Hernandez Closer platoon in a 1986 league. Both closer salaries' are below 2 million. Worrell is a 5R. Hernandez is a 7L. They have combined for 30 out of 35 saves. And I have a really good set up man. I realize the 2007 season is different, but so far Hal seems to be doing alright with my closer platoon. Good luck if you try yours.

It's early & I'm enjoying some success (in an extreme P's park) with 7R Street & RH 7L Brett Myers.

Myers can also start & be a longman (R3) so nice value for $2.77M.
