LOL!

Told you so!

For those of you unfamiliar with Plattsburgh, it's a small city (pop. 20,000) 60 miles due south of Montreal whose economic survival hinges upon 2 things (now that the Air Force Base has closed): The State Univ. of New York @ Plattsburgh; and the thousands of Quebecois who flood south each weekend to buy cheap goods at the local Wal-Mart and shopping malls. And yes, it's colder than a witches t!t... about -10 when I was working in Lake Placid this morning.

Lucky, if I had a quarter for every Canadian who's asked me: "Which way to de centre de shopping?" I'd have retired long ago!

I mean, there are?

I have a good anecdote for you. (true story, by the way).

My aunt was complaining about the property of the streets in Monteal.

"I tell you, she said, the Americans, they would never accept this state of affair!"

I replied: "Well, you know, I have just arrived from New York for a congress, and I can tell you it's pretty dirty in some side of the town; Been in San Francisco, two weeks ago, and as soon as you get out of the business district, garbages are seen everywhere"

(my aunt, a bit angry that I argue with her): Now who's talking about New York and these other countries. [b:59b5fc7384][i:59b5fc7384]I'm[/i:59b5fc7384][/b:59b5fc7384] talking of the United States. Go see at Plattsburgh, and you'll know what I mean.

I tell you, up here, Plattsburgh is bigger than the US!!

Looks like I'm still the oldest codger in the league, so please be gentle and show proper if undue respect when setting your lineups and starters! :D

I've encountered some older guys than me playing this game (one or two of you might recall the "Old Codger" thread). But Uncle NY is next oldest I've heard of for first exposure to the box game.

Bought my 1963 edition from a tiny ad in the back of Boy's Life, the Boy Scout magazine. Could only snitch enough cash from Mom's purse to buy 8 teams...but the cards were bigger and printed on real, heavy cardboard, not the flimsy paper stuff they sell today (since about 1966). Also none of those tedious "advanced" rules to slow down the game...not even L/R splits. Lots of rainy Oregon hours spent rolling those dice...until later in high school when I traded dices for vices....

Long since graduated from Boy Scouts, but obviously not from Strat...tho hadn't played for 20+ years until I stumbled onto SOMO with a nostalgia-driven Strat search, just as last year's online season was getting underway. I couldn't resist.

Given the time it takes to be competitive with you wastrels, I'm now trying to figure out how to break the habit...can't afford to retire, and I'm afraid internet access might be a problem living in a box out under I-15!

[b:dfd4ce0825]ps to all:[/b:dfd4ce0825] When you're ready to move to a place where the sun always shines, short drive to a dozen or more national parks, clean air, starry skies, no traffic, more golf holes per capita than any other city on the planet, and an hour's drive from Las Vegas, let me know!

Temps have ranged from the 20's (at night) to the 70's this past week, sunny and dry here on the edge of the Mojave Desert, but plenty of snow in the nearby mountains.

In the half dozen years we've lived here (and in Las Vegas), it's snowed an inch or two, maybe 3 times that I recall...uncommon but not exactly rare...kinda like those 118-degree days in July!

But besides growing up in the Oregon rain, I've survived enough Boston winters to have some idea what I'm missing!
