I think most people are using proxies

Postby calbatross » Fri Jun 20, 2008 1:27 pm

Based on the rapid spurts this morning I would say that's the case. Some maybe do not load up as extensively as others, but in an NL or AL only draft, the attractive players go twice as fast as you'd expect. Draft strategies evolve at a much faster rate as well.

In any case, eventually as proxies get used up the draft will get stuck on someone. This morning for a while it was me. At 7 this morning it looked like it would be quite a while before it would make it thru to me. When I finally got a chance to take a break at work, there it was staring me in the face...my turn to pick, no more proxies available.

Let's encourage the habitually slow folks, but not aggravate them...and if I remember the agony of the last draft correctly, this draft is speeding by much much faster than the last one.

I prefer to make my picks live, but if it gets to within 3 or four picks of my spot during the day, I have a good enough idea of the talent pool to place a short proxy list to get through my spot and fill a need. During the day, I do have the flexibility to monitor the draft closely, so if I am up and the draft is stopped, don't expect it to take too long for me to make my selection. (MARK - since you pick right after me be aware of this! Don't stray too far from your PC if I am on the clock. :) )

Email alerts

This would be cool...

If anyone has an "in" with the somdraft programmers, one easy to employ upgrade idea would be to have the draft software sent automatic email notification to a user when his draft spot is up.

I get email notifications on my Blackberry. From there it is usually pretty easy for me to get to a PC and make a selection.

cal, I hear ya, but it's not the hold ups I'm worried about aggrivating, although I surely don't want to go all meho or anything. if you're gonna be away, proxy up. i could easily load ten hopefuls in order of preference right now, in fact, if you guys ALL want to step aside for a few minutes, ive got an entire "dream" roster ready. what happens is what happened to you, those that like to check in frequently and enjoy the live draft process, and get frequent rushes of anger and joy at whose gone and whose still available, eventually figure its NEVER getting back to me and you stop checking in or proxying yourself, and one delay leads to another. end of sermon.
(p.s. Im one of those looneys, (now loneys) who thinks a draft is every bit or more fun than the games, and checks in whenever I can)

I probably put in more time on the draft than the season itself. (Especially given my last few seasons.)

At this point, I'm proxying by position, rather than favorite player. For example, right now I need a closer -- any closer. I've put two in the proxy queue; since there's only one person picking before my turn, I know I'm going to get one of them. Normally, I've been putting three players in the queue, being reasonably assured I'll get one of them.

I still need to fill in some starting pitching and outfield spots. There are plenty of decent hitters among the remaining outfielders, but virtually none of them can field.

While I have proxies set up, I may not be on the board very much. Everyone have a great weekend.
