Petco Hitters

Petco Hitters

Postby brooklaw » Sun Jan 29, 2006 12:18 pm

Despite putting together a staff with a 1.27 whip, my team scores even less (.304 OBP). Nearly every hitter I try has problems in Petco. So I plead, tell me what hitters have fared best in Petco. I hear Casey does well there, how about Bonds, Arod, Burke, etc.

Burke good. Kendall good. H Matsui good. Look for either OBP with no bphr on their cards or power hitters with good natural hr #'s.

If J-Pav sees this, he is great at Petco, you may want to page him.

[b:748023ef10]Brooklaw[/b:748023ef10]:

How much did you spend on your pitching? The low ERA low WHIP only matter if you're spending the right amount of money (generally less than $32m).

You can win in Petco (or any pitchers park for that matter) with very low hitting stats.

The easiest thing to do is go to the tour forum, the 2005 Tour League Links thread ([b:748023ef10]mesquiton[/b:748023ef10]). Check out all the tour teams, and you'll see the hitters stats are way down, even more than in the autoleagues (pitchers parks, higher level of competition). Find the teams that win, use the guys they use, work in your own insights and you'll see more success.

[b:748023ef10]Jay[/b:748023ef10]: Thanks!

Natural hits total bases natural hits. In some cases, it may be OK to have good hitters who have lots of nat hits and lots of BPHRs (such as Vlad Guerrero) if you have lots of hitter's parks close by. Did I say natural hits and total bases? But generally, I won't accept less than 25 nat hits and 40 TBs unless there's a very high OB chance. Forgot to mention natural hits and total bases. So Drew, with his 22 nat hits and less than 40 TBs vs righties won't play like a 10 mil dollar man unless you have lots of hitter's parks around and you're keeping him from a hitter's park team--slight maybe then...but can't have a team of em.

But yes--looking at the successful teams give the best benchmark but make sure you don't just look at their players--look at their splits and the environment they played in (opposing parks, pitchers, hitters etc)...

Sometimes folks will come back and saypost a short quip like "Pedro or Maddux or etc sucks in Petco" but somehow will forget to mention he was in a division with a Minute Maid (Shea), Citizen, and Wrigley (Safeco) against the Beltres, Hafners, and Vladdys of the world. Gotta always look at context. Especially natural hits and total bases. Did I say that?

Here's my most successful Petco team: OBP and team speed were the keys to winning many ballgames. The value of an extra base via bunt, gb or fb is worth it's weight in gold in these pitcher ballparks.

Variation on LA Bear's Petco theme. Cheap starters, high avg/clutch hitters and, oh yeah, that SF Leftfielder guy helps too. Check out Jawny Damon's Petco numbers, batting cleanup! And Lou Merloni - 49 rbi in 209 ab platooning. Team lost world series, 4-3 :x

I'm in Petco and wouldn't mind getting that SF Leftfielder guy myself...someone dropped him about sixty games into the season...along with Pujols!

Alas it is impossible to do without dismantling my team...couldn't do it anyways due to costs and roster requirements.

[b:153d0ede9e]Brooklaw[/b:153d0ede9e]:

Here's what I do...

[i:153d0ede9e]Steel Magnolias[/i:153d0ede9e] - Kauffman

$32.05 on pitching, 8th in offense, 1st in pitching, 1s at 2B, CF and 2 at SS, no Bonds, .340 OBP. (That "secret formula" nonsense actually works).

[i:153d0ede9e]Driving Miss Daisy[/i:153d0ede9e] - Montreal

$24.62 on pitching, 2nd in offense, 4th in pitching, 1 in CF, 2s at 2B and SS, no Bonds, .350 OBP (low budget staff pays off this time, although not usually).

http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/baseball/stratomatic/2005/team/team_other.html?user_id=35881

[i:153d0ede9e]Fried Green Tomatoes[/i:153d0ede9e] - Petco

$28.67 on pitching, 6th in offense, 2nd in pitching, 1 in CF, 2s at 2B and SS, yes Bonds, .360 OBP (.[i:153d0ede9e]360 OBP in Petco[/i:153d0ede9e]??)

http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/baseball/stratomatic/2005/team/team_other.html?user_id=39141

All three won it all.

I've had 1's in CF, 2B AND SS at the same time and still haven't won a title.
