Poison Pills Draft is running...

Our Mystery Card games - The '70s Game, Back to the '80s, Back to the '90s

I agree with what Seanreflex is saying. Adding penalty conditions to a poison after it has been chosen is unjust. Any penalties applying to a poison should be stated prior to it's selection.

If the penalty is to remain then the selection process would be most fair to backtrack to Seanreflex's turn with all the options open that were at that time and continue on from that point. Changing the rules as we go, without at least a consensus on a need for that change, is setting a bad precedent.

That's my humble opinion.

Lets keep the league fun

Postby YountFan » Sat Jan 28, 2006 11:25 pm

Lets keep the league fun. We don't need to hardass. If we see someone is not taking their poison (ie not trading, or having incorrect players) let it be corrected. Trust me it will happen by mistake. People get too many teams going and lose track of what's legal and illegal. No one will do it intentionally, but someone might. Most times the dollar hits are enough penalty.

[b:d45b146319]If someone does violate their poison and will not fix it they there will be hell to pay on the boards.[/b:d45b146319]

Why isn't Yount available to the sajak's? T is not a vowel.

And I have see Sean trade. His poison plays to his strength, just a skyes in the murph plays to his. Now me in the Kingdome...what was I drinkin'

[quote:a79016efc4]I think most of us would be more worried about our SOM reputations if we played in a theme and didn't follow the rules. That's a pretty good incentive to police ourselves. [/quote:a79016efc4]

Cheesehead, that's the point I was trying to make. I consider a bunch of guys on these board as friends; I bet I've played in at least 15 or 20 leagues with guys like Sykes and YF, and 5 to 10 with BJ, Sog and others. We all respect each other, and we'll fulfill our commitments out of respect to the guys we play in the leagues with.

YF is right, a few things will happen inadvertently, but we police ourselves pretty well.

Let's keep it fun. I'll make my trades, others will do what they're supposed to. I'm curious to see how Sykes will do with his non-HR guys in the Murph. Something tells me he'll figure a way to make it all work.

Good luck all,

Sean

Uglyjerry's pick of Tim Raines would put his roster in violation of his pill. Has only one W on his '83 card, pill states per side of the plate for atleast one season, the other seasons are all N's. He can either draft Raines and then trade him before the season starts or not draft him.

I need some clarification. I've made an error in the last two themed leagues I've played in, and certainly don't want to in this league. Here is my dilemna:
In the Sports Encyclopedia Baseball Book and on most of my baseball cards, Lou Whitaker is listed as Louis Whitaker. In this Strat game, he is simply Lou Whitaker. Should I use what is on the Strat card or his real given name when fufilling my poison? I'm not trying to create problems, just clarification before I would pick.

Jimmy,

Put the dictionary down, and nobody will get hurt

If his TSN card says Lou, then his name must be Lou. I thought his first name was "sweet".

The rules should govern the information on the boards, and on the boards his name is Lou, not Louis. I say he's a valid pick for you. (Even though he is my favorite 2B).

Cheers,

Sean

I thought Lou Pinella was "Sweet Lou"? After second thought there is not much sweet about Lou Pinella even though I like the guy.

As far as the consonant and vowel teams we should use the name on the SOM cards except for Clemens, Orosco & Rickey whose names are not on the cards.

I agree with Buckaroo concerning Raines. The way I read the Speed Merchants pill is that a player must be a W vs LHP and vs RHP for at least one of his card years.

I feel fairly good about my Wanabe pill. I have gone through all of the player pool and have found 200 hitters and 120 pitchers that I would be able to use (do not have a card year for Oakland, Los Angeles, Minnesota, NY Mets, Kansas City, Detroit, Baltimore, St. Louis or Philadelphia who all won a World Series in the 80's).

Are we going to start the drat today?

i am not trying to make this a hardass league...i certainly trust sean to fulfill his obligations... i want to try to explain myself... it would certainly be a stategy for players to hold out on sean for a deal that willl be lopsided in their favor knowing that he has to trade...after all that is his only poison...he has know draft limitations...no stadium restrictions...no pitching or lineup restrictions...nothing. As we all draft we will take a player that we might hope we could get later but you see that a certain manager is 2 picks behind you and you feel like he is going to take him...so you select him earlier so you have him....that is a strategy in drfting much like i am talking about with this pill. some of the people in this league are new to the game and may not know sean from anyone else....so i think all of us should have some penalty. i am not advocating any kind of collusion to make him violate his pill. hell if he offers me a trade that is lopsided in my favor than i would take it....the pill is that he has to win despite making 8 lopsided trades. the word lopsided is not in there but it should be understood. i love to trade in leagues also...see poison 1...but if people don't hold out on him then what is his poison. If he offers up John Lowenstein for Johnny Grubb....and someone takes that deal...what is his Poison?

One thing I hate about message boards is other people can't really understand your tone or intent of the message and will often misinterpret the intent. I apologize if someone takes my prior comments as being a hardass. however the idea as posted on many occassions was to make sure all pills were close to equal and that we needed to clarify or fix some. I got very little response on this.... I would suggest as yount fan did...sean...put some clarification or parameters on your pill that make everyone understand your intent to operate under its original meaning or definition which was at best vague.

we should not change rules at this point but remember that people who picked ahead of sean may have had a different interpretation of that poison and not selected it. should we have to go back? this is not a perfect science and we all make mistakes when setting up leagues because we don't do this as a full time occupation...I am simply suggesting that we put parameters on all pills. if a quick fix mistake was made then by all means fix it and move on...we have had that in many leagues i have played in...i have made violations...

others?

[quote:822d895e96]have at least one season per side of the plate with a W in their power collumn[/quote:822d895e96]

I does sound like W/W to me now, but when I read it the first time I thought it could be W/N or N/W. Looks like UJ needs to find a new #1 pick.
