A week into the season and the Marlins are off to a decent start. The team went a respectable 9-9 in its tough division, and is scoring runs while not giving up too many, allowing only double digits once in 21 games.

Bob Lemon is definitely pitching more like an ace this season than he did last season (9-11, 4.54/1.44), but the Marlins may live to regret cutting last seasons surprise Lefty Williams in favour of Tom Zachary. Hopefully the increased emphasis on defense (1's & 2's at every position) will make up for the lack of pitching.

It will be interesting to see how much the Marlins will miss Jack Clark, who led last years squad with a very impressive 168 runs. Gehringer has not been too impressive at leadoff so far, but Hank Greenberg has definitely started off the season hot and leads the team in Runs, RBI & HR. He may need to keep it up all season if the Marlins are to reach their stated goal of having their first winning season since Season III.

[b:12bfec7519]Upbeat Blues off to Solid Start[/b:12bfec7519]

The New Minglewood Blues are off to a respectable start this season posting a 13-11 record in their first 24 games. The Blues fared well against their divisional opponents (12-6) but have subsequently slid in non-division games losing two to a tough Marlins squad and being swept by the Peaches.

The Blues have had a pretty balanced attack. The starting pitching has been surprisingly solid. Lefty Leifeild (4-1) has led the charge. The bullpen has been a little less surefooted. Newhouser has been a rock in closing situations, but untimely breakdowns by set-up men Dan Quisenberry and Tippy Martinez have hurt the Blues record.

Offensively, newcomers Felipe Alou and George Brett have been hot at the plate, complementing the power hitting Willie Mays.

Currently the Blues are one game behind the Perry Masons. The Masons pitching has simply been too much for many opponents. Up next for the Blues is the hard-hitting Grey Goose. The Goose are off to a stellar 16-8 start. The Blues look to bounce back from their 4 game losing streak.

The Marlins recorded their first series sweep of the year, winning 3 on the road from the Red Headed Step Children. The Marlins were able to gain 2 games on the division leading Grey Goose, thanks to the Minglewood Blues, but know there is still a lot of season left to be played.

Although Zachary is still struggling somewhat, after a commanding performance on opening night, the Marlins were definitely able to support him as they pounded the Step Children in the 2nd game, accumulating 5 HR & 19 hits, not to mention 10 Base on Balls.

Gehrig is now leading the team in RBI & HR, but Greenberg is still keeping it close, especially with a strong effort in Game III that ensured the Marlins earned the sweep with his extra-innings sacrifice.

Lou Gehrig & Hank Greenbergs HR battle reminds me of the famous '61 race between Mantle & Maris. :)

Gehrig is slowly pulling away from Greenberg in HR, and has the lead in Runs, RBI and Xtra Base hits ... but Greenberg still leads in BB & OBP.

Interesting how much change can occur in both a week and a season. Gehrig was barely on the MVP leaderboard, and now he has just passed Brett to take over at #1.

Meanwhile Lemon has already won more games in 15 starts this season, and is on the CY Young leaderboard, than he won all of last season for me (in 27 starts).

[b:b3021af753]Blues Limp Along, Stay in Hunt[/b:b3021af753]

After a good start, the injury bug has got the Blues and have left them mired in third place. The good news is that in the highly competitive Central, they remain only three games from the top, behind the Masons and the Specials.

Injuries have frustrated the Blues offense. The typically durable Gary Carter has been sidelined on three separate occasions with back spasms. Felipe Alou missed ten games with a wrist injury and now George Brett is convalescing after suffering what appears to be a bizarre case of pine tar poisoning.

Injuries haven't been the Blues only problem, the starting pitching has really been suspect, with only George Mogridge consistently putting in strong performances.

Goffchile hopes the Blues can turn it around and return to the playoff worthy ball that Blues fans have come to expect, but we will see.

Judgement at Munich...

Postby Munich_Man » Mon Feb 20, 2006 12:13 pm

The Germaniacs passed a guilty verdict on the Perry Masons and sentenced them to a series sweep. This continues the recent roll of the mighty men from Munich as they won their 7th straight to solidify their lead in the west.

Can the Teutonic Titans continue their recent roll?

Tonight's series will be another test as the germaniacs attempt to take out both the East and Central leaders on subsequent nights when they try to take the fuzz of the Peaches.
