The Savoy Specials made some startling changes in a desperate attempt to save their season. Playing below .500, as they have for virtually the whole season, management released 3B Wade Boggs and 1B/LF Stan Musial. This caught Specials fans by surprise as Boggs and Musial were two of the best hitters on a disappointing Specials squad.
Sports reporters were shocked, as well. "I don't want the public to get the wrong idea. Stories are floating around" wrote Max Mercy. Of these latest moves, Mercy said, "You gotta wonder boy. This hit like a bolt of lightning."
Dr. X went out and signed Jackie Robinson and Rickey Henderson to replace the departed hitters. "I should'a done this when I was only six games behind the Eagles. Hopefully we can make up the eleven game deficit starting with the series tonight" Dr. X mused.
Specials' fans were dubious noting that Henderson and Robinson tend to be injury prone. Of Henderson, season ticket holder Harriet Bird muttered, "Sometimes he whines so much you'd think someone shot him" as she sipped a Silver Bullet beer. "Where is the Whammer when you need him?" scoffed Red Blow after hearing of Robinson's signing.
It remains to be seen how these moves will impact the Specials. Will the dark clouds continue for an underperforming team? Or, will lightning strike and change the fortunes of this club?
