So, I'm in Shea, the waiver is coming up, I have the fifth pick and some money to play with. Soto, Blyleven, Higuera, and Fernando are all out on the wire. Who do I want the most? My other starters are Key, Drabek, and Andujar.

NOTICE: The following advice is coming from an 80's player with a loosing record.

I would drop Berenguer for Blyleven. Since Shea's BPHR rating is only 1-7 I would dump either Mitchell or Canseco (or possibly both) for more of a doubles hitter. Von Hayes, Jose Cruz or players like that. I would think that if you plan to use a 4 fielder in the OF then he better really produce. I don't think Canseco or Mitchell will produce that well in Shea.

Thanks, gentlemen. Canseco may well be on his way out for a lefty hitter with better D and more OBP. I'd like to keep Mitchell as a DH -- I'm sentimental for those 86 Mets -- but he could go too if the right player becomes available. I lost out on many favorites, so I'm going to have to work the wire, of all things.

I wouldn't keep Sisk under any conditions. Too many blow-up cards. T. Stoddard a big gamble, too (but I guess all .75's are). Dayley is always worth a flier. Donnie Moore has severel good cards (though he is a reverse righty).


Definitely need to use that 16M to upgrade roster (as I'm sure you intend). Higuera is a good pick. Blyleven is a tough pitcher. It's hard to tell what you're focusing on with this team. Is it pitching?

I'm basing the team on pitching, defense, OBP. Granted, I've got a funky situation at the corners defensively with Kruk and Madlock, but I'm hoping for some offense there. If not, they get swapped out for glovemen. I've added an array of cheap relief pitchers and I'll see what's working there once the season gets going. Plus I picked up Blyleven and Browning right after the waiver, both of whom should be successful at Shea-- if, of course, I get the right cards.

Looks good to me. I've gone to the playoffs twice in two attempts in Oakland with similar teams. OBP is key but you still need some pop, which it looks like you have. Good luck!
