The SOM method doesn't work quite that way, but the result should be the same. It allows you to list players in order of priority who you want to come in to replace a player at each position. So if you wanted your best defender to be the first choice to replace your injured CF, you can list all your CF backups, putting those with the best defense first. HAL will then choose the highest priority player on that list who is available.
In replyCharlie, I take it you are talking about the defensive replacement section in Manager strategy, and i can see how you might get the same result but does listing a player there give HAL any inducement to use him in all late inning situations? I mean I generally do not late inning replacements, mostly because I generally have inexpensive bench players who can hit but not field. The point is it would work for injuries as you suggest but would it trigger another issue that is that HAL would begin to replace a player for fielding purposes?
