Four Man vs Five Man pitching staffs

Just to show you don't necessarily have to go the cheap route when you are going for 7 starters, With Pete, Mordecai and Babe Adams you have pitching you can always count on and with Lanier as one of the lefty specialists you have a 4th starter that is a legit stud.

You can really only do this in a 100 million league (I think) and there is a big risk of not enough offense. But when you love pitching and it is working this is great. Why I would give Eddie Rommel 4 starts with this staff is beyond me actually but I have and he is undefeated.

6 starter rotation

Postby GREGGZILIANI » Thu Feb 02, 2006 9:23 pm

Just wanted to add a 6-man rotation that falls between extreme cheapness and the Cadillac of staffs. This crew included a bunch of lefty killers for a Yankee 56 team. No ring, but for a mid to low priced staff, they did pretty good. Its a lot easier mixing and matching I find especially in the specialty parks. Also, I have found that you get a lot more bang for your buck with non-* SPs. There is definitely a pricetag premium to them.

On the Game 5 angle, which I agree is significant, the only time I got the benefit of it with the extreme advantage of Pete, he lost game 5 to Dazzy Vance. That muted my enthusiasm for drafting around this contingency coming up, but I do agree that the Game 5 disadvantage is something 5-man staffs should be aware of.

Here is my 5 man staff - PERIOD- experiment. Faber started 1 game due to injury, and Sellers was used in a LONG extra inning game. It was deadball era pitching at it's best as everyone started & relieved. Led the league in ERA by a wide margin and made the playoffs in a highly competitive division.

Looks like a great pitching staff--and the amazing thing is that your five guys pitched virtually every inning. Does this mean that with a five man the starters can also relieve without losing their place in the rotation? Who knew? How did you manage to focus all the innings on them?

If the starters can also relieve the money you save on the BP might make a 5 man a really good investment. Thanks for sharing and I'd like to learn more.

Not sweet. I'm the guy who knocked you out of the playoffs in round 1. Don't get me wrong. I'm sure you're a great guy and I know what you did was not a breach of the rules, strictly speaking. I know it's "gaming the game."

There are those who "game the game" and those who don't. I don't because I don't think it's right. But that's me.

The way I look at it, in taking you in 5 the first round, I had to overcome going up against a team that had a $70M pitching staff, because for this playoff series you had approx. $40M worth of starting pitching and in any given game, another $31M coming out of the bullpen (the other 4 SP's).

To each his own. I'm not knocking you for "gaming" things this way. But I will say it tickled the h-ll out of me to knock you out of the post season.

FZL....2nd in the west....I was first with 93 wins....lost in the semi's also. But then I am making a career out of losing in the semi's .... ATG2, netplay, 69 .....makes no difference...i am now combined in the 3 formats 11 semi appearances in the last 13 teams ....all 11 lost in the semi's.
