Some of our managers have indicated that they are getting a little bored with the present format that restricts draft picks to one 70's division only. I don't know if anyone is interested, but I'll throw out a different format for your consideration.

This format would be like some that already exist, and that I think some of you might be part of. We would start with the 1970 season only, and only players who appeared in MLB that year would be eligible for draft. The next season would be restricted only to players who played in 1971, and so on. At the end of each season we would draft the "rookie" players and lose those players who no longer played MLB.

An example: Alan Ashby played his first MLB game in 1973 and played throughout the decade. He would only be eligible for the 1973 season and beyond. Roger Repoz played his last game in 1973, so he would not be eligible after that year. The first year might be tough, as there are only 249 eligible position players.

As everyone seems to enjoy the $60M format as a change of pace I'd propose sticking to it.

I have a spreadsheet of players and the years they played, so that part is done. We could autodraft the first year with the understanding that we would have to dump players who weren't eligible. After that we would have a draft of new players that would be conducted according to won/lost record.

All that said, if our managers want to stick with the present format, I'll go along. Maybe some of you don't want either. That's fine too. If there are other ideas, please share.

Thanks for reading,

Will we be able to make 12 15 man teams out of the 249 players and be properly positioned? Could we carry a 24 man roster? How many eligible players does 71 and 72 have? There certainly would not be much waiver activity. I am intrigued!

I love decade leagues. Just for reference, this one differs from the others I've been in that it's based on MLB service years, not on SOM carded years, and is 60 Million cap. I like both of these twists.

A couple of ideas/questions:
*Having enough catchers could be a problem. One solution is that all .75 catchers (or all players) are eligible for any year even if they didn't play that year
* I haven't played a Decade League with minor leagues. That would be sort of fun to have, although it is a pain to keep track of. One idea would be to store an online spreadsheet (like in google documents) that anyone could access to update/refer to who is in the minors
* If draft position is based on won-lost record I'd suggest either a gentlemen's agreement not to purposely tank a season or some sort of randomizer (like four lowest records in the league go into a lottery for draft order).

The most critical shortage is in 1970 and there are enough catchers - plenty really - to go around.

YellowDog, I'm not sure I'm up to tracking minor leaguers anymore. Given the limited nature of players in 70-71 and 79 we might be best to just have weighted waivers. They really help control things well in a $60M league.

I like the randomizer concept. Let's build that into the league. Perhaps the bottom 3, given we have three divisions.

Other thoughts? These are good.

Scott, it's tight in 70 and 79, but far from impossible. I guess 24 would be fine after the draft.

How about other managers? Would you stick with this league?

Keepers

Postby PracticalDoc » Wed Aug 20, 2008 4:51 pm

This is my first keeper league and despite my (ahem, my team's) last place finish, I do like the idea of keeping a core of players season after season. I think I can work with any format but I'd like it to be mandatory to keep 9-12 players over the last season. A little more free agent flexibility would be nice.

I think what the Doc says is very practical(pun intended) and agree with him.

It would be simple enough to do this. A manager can choose to keep any or all of his players each season, provided they are carded. We all have our favorites that we won't part with, like Rob Latorre's thing about Reggie Smith and Ted Uhlaender.

Would it be acceptable to say that it's a keeper league to any degree a manager wants? Some may keep 20 of 25, whlle others may blow the thing up and start over.

Thoughts?

We still haven't heard from many managers. Yountfan Jeff is out, but it sounds like PracticalDoc, klx, YellowDog, Jayhawk, and me, Brett Favre are still in. Fred Aaron is "walking in Memphis" (man I love that song and that town). BTW Fred, we have a Memphis, Missouri you need to check out too!

How about the rest of ya?

I would like to see the player list, but yea guess I am in. I would be in favor of the 'keep as many or as little as you want' keeper rule. Finally since Justice Holmes has no comment, I vote for kicking him out in favor of Bowie Kuhn and orange baseballs.
