ATG IV 16 event Franchise League

jpgavin, I just sent you a PM with my email address. I had sent you two others but I guess you didn't get them. I wonder if there is something wrong with the PM message system.

Marge,

There may be a problem with the PM's. I got the one you just sent, but none of the other ones. :? If anyone else tried to PM me and hasn't received the list, let me know.

JP: Ditto for me on the PMs. I'd sent one previously when you announced you had the $8M list, and never received a response. I sent another after reading the most recent postings above.

Thanks again for the compilation. It'll definitely come in handy down the road when I'm dealing with a threadbare franchise and a $200M payroll!

Trade rules for season 2 - you can make trades provided all the players involved for the trade played for both franchises.
Drafts are autodrafts unless changed by Idanred, who will also provide a rule and decide how we'll determine the divisions. 8-)

Novie, I think we are still awaiting word from ldanred about the draft and division rules. According to a thread in the 2007 SOM forum, ldanred currently appears to be M.I.A., so I'm not sure when we'll hear about these rules for season 2.

Here are the basic rules for the league. They can be adjusted each season by the person who gets to make a franchise related rule.

This is a 16 season league. Each of the 12 managers gets to manage each of the original 16 franchises once.

For the first season each franchise will only have access to the players carded to their team. This is our current season. No trades for the first season

For each subsequent season:

1. A manager can draft, claim from waivers, or trade for any player that ever had an at bat or threw a pitch for their franchise. (The Braves can draft Babe Ruth etc...) Baseballreference.com is a great resource if you need to check what teams a player played for.

2. Each manager will get to set the salary cap, waiver rule and DH rule for one of the 16 seasons. (buster j ratt for season 2) Salary caps can be 60, 80, 100 or 125 mil. In fact I'm okay with any cap inbetween (90 mil etc...) I think anything over 125 might price some franchises out of any hope of being competitive.

[b:fa094df3c3]Please note, if/when we use a non-standard cap (125 mil) each team must have the appropriate amount of cash available throughout the season. This means if we play a 90 mil cap, you start with a 100 mil team and you must have 10 mil dollars available throughout the season. [/b:fa094df3c3]

3. Each manager will get to decide on live draft versus autodraft once and will be able to set a franchise related rule for that season. This will be a different season than the one you set the salary cap for. Live drafts will be a maximum of 6 rounds. Franchise related rules will modify rule #1 above. (Idanred for season 2)

Sample rules:

Each team can claim 1 franchise player up front as long as the player played more than half his career for the franchise. (The Yankees can protect Ruth from the Red Sox and Braves.)

-or-

You can't have more than two players that had fewer than 600 AB's for your franchise on your roster at any time.

You can get creative, but try to be reasonable. The rule will be set after the salary cap etc. has been given.

4. For the 3 other seasons, we'll decide all of the rules by vote. As noted above, we'll have a vote on the rules in seasons 10, 15, and 16.

5. For every season, ballparks must have been used by your franchise at some point.

A little more about the franchise related rule - revised

Postby jpgavin » Fri Sep 26, 2008 2:28 pm

The basic rules of this league allow you to take any player on a franchise as long as that player had one at bat or threw a pitch for your franchise. The goal of this rule is to make the weaker franchises more competitive, especially at higher salary caps.

Such an open ended rule has disadvantages. Primarily you can lose a player you might consider "the face of a franchise" to another team. (Cobb to the A's) Everybody's likely to have a different idea about how strict or how liberal we should be about allowing managers to pirate players from other franchises.

Giving each manager a chance to make their own franchise related rule allows each of us to make the pool of players available to each franchise as wide open or as narrowly defined as we feel is appropriate. It also allows us to mix things up a little bit so we don't get bored after 16 seasons. 8-)

If you feel like Cobb should never wind up on the A's, make a rule that prevents that sort of thing. If you feel like the small market teams need some extra help keep, the rules as liberal as possible, or make a rule that limits teams based on the number of high priced players available to them.
