It's all in the cards

Postby Jablowmi » Wed Sep 07, 2005 11:33 am

I know it's early and I know that I'm 17-10, but...... I am getting killed by bad cards. After the draft and waiver period, I had my best team ever on paper:

Guerrero
Schmidt
Yount
Parker
Murray
Randolph
Dykstra
Daniels
Lavaillere

Three first round draft picks! Good balance, power, defense, etc.

100 ABs into the season and I've dumped Guerrero (bad card revealed thru injury) and Parker. Daniels is hitting 242/330, equally bad against L and R, so it may be his worst card - he's next on the chopping block. Dykstra is hitting 257/319 with power against L, so it may be his worst card. And, last but not least, Yount is hitting 236/274. Schmidt's card is not his worst, but may be his 6L (revealed thru injury). Luckily, I was able to get untouched cards of Van Slyke and Lemon for Guerrero and Parker, but my guys are dropping like flies!

Surprisingly good pitching, though!

Thanks for reading my rant.

"Reveal thru injury"

Postby honestiago1 » Fri Sep 09, 2005 4:16 pm

Greetings:

I have only one 80s team and an ATGII team at the moment. I am curious how the injury reveal works. When you say you "reveal through injury" I assume the player gets injured for x-amount of games that would be over the AB+W's for a certain year (meaning if a player gets a lengthy injury, I can assume I have one his guards with fewer PA's)?

I noticed a lot of folks dump players and pitchers very quickly. I am over 1/3 of the way through the season and am only sure about a few cards. The others I make educated guesses on.

On, and I just HAVE to crow about this one (the dudes in the league have heard it enough, but). I picked up McCatty as a throw in, and he's 7-0. Got that 1980 card. Funny thing is, he's doing this in Wrigley Field. 'Course, as weather gets better...

You also look to how the player was injured. For example: You have Van Slyke, and his injury comes up when he's hit by a pitch. You know then that you have to have his '91 card.

You also want to check whether the injury was against a lefty or a righty. Sometimes the lefty injury will be a flyout but the righty injury will be a strikeout. Lineout is the most common injury. When that comes up, it may only eliminate a year or two.

Ultimately, unless an injury points to a single year, mostly managers have to make educated guesses, as you are doing. We look at not only injury data, but platoon tendencies, hit by pitch, relatively rare event like triples, etc. If a player has little HR power, sometimes a homer vs LHP or RHP can eliminate a year if the hitter is a W for power and has no HR on his card. Over the course of a season, you get a pretty good idea of what season it is--most of the time. Or at least you can narrow it down to a couple of seasons. This can influence whether you platoon players and otherwise how you play them.

And yes, sometimes folks drop players too fast, which creates an opportunity for you to pick them up. :D

Well, I did exactly what I said I wouldn't do. I dropped DwEvans for Strawberry. I have an overloaded RH lineup as far as power goes. The other teams in my division have overwhelmingly RHP. DwEvans was at .213 versus RH over 200 AB's, leading me to believe I had either his .238 year (less likely) or his .269 year (which was about a 3L, if I remember right). I'm not sure about Straw. Since he was on waivers, I had no splits. Think I havea .269 year, with the 30+ HR's. However, I will be moving hom from a SI:7 HR:10 park to Wrigley. He had the same amount of HR's as Evans, who was in Wrigley the same amount of games as Straw was in his park. He DID have about a 1-1 W-K ration.

I'm really going to miss that defense in RF, but I've been lingering about 3G back for the last 15 games or so. Think Soto is finally going to be untacked (pretty sure I have the 100+ walks year with the HR's allowed versus lefties [can't remember year]). Someone dumped Key way too quickly, and I have a Candeleria Lefty killer card. With Straw, I have this lineup:

Raines (I think the .330 year)
Butler (one of his average years
Sandberg ('84 card; already with 7 triples)
Strawberry (second in the league in walks at the moment)
Hrbek (hitting LH better than RH for avg. right now)
Jacoby (but I'm not sure it's his 32 yet, but he's on a HR tear right now)
McRae (lotsa doubles, not much pop)
Templeton (I have one of his better years)
Boone (not really hitting at all)

Straw will post the same power numbers as Evans, and give me more speed.

Rotation is: Soto, Key, Alexander, Candeleria. For spot starts, I pick and choose from: Falcone (seems I got lucky with him), McCatty (REALLY lucky with him, as already described), and Terry (just picked up; off to a good start, but not sure which card). I've been very selective about who my spot starters pitch against (McCatty is killing lefties; I save him for that and favorable ballparks [whan I can]).

Anyway, team had gotten off to 6-11 start, but is now (finally) 29-28. Sandberg's average just climbed over .260. Hrkbek has not begun to really unload on righties yet, and, as I said, Soto's starts should balance out the 3-7 he's at right now (we only got him one run last outing, when he K'ed 12 over a CG). Team SHOULD compete, but we'll see.

Adendum: McRae

Postby honestiago1 » Sat Sep 10, 2005 11:55 am

Just figured out I have the '83 McRae -- .311 with lotsa 2B's, 3L. Very good cleanup man versus lefties (GB A's mitigated somewhat by K's in the 6-7 range under the 2's, and batting Sandberg in the 3 hole gives the runner hold -- he should thrive there). Now I don't feel as bad abolut losing Evans (hell, I was hitting 30 points higher against LHP's anyway -- need some balance)
