2 Petco teams

2 Petco teams

This one is struggling (I usually get the tough divisions):

This one went to game seven of the finals:

I can't seem to duplicate the production I got from that team and don't even know why. On a side note...doesn't it seem that anyone who wins the RJ draw pretty much wins? Such fair competition...

Nobody has a clue what I did right with that one team? I can't seem to duplicate it.

Before I check the links out tonight and go through the teams to give my .02:

A while ago, I think it was in the old boards Luckyman wrote some very cool thoughts on why the RJ teams do so well...and how to work against it. check it out if you can... if you need a link to the old forums I think Moose's site still has one.

Hey there Canuck,

Haven't forgotten about your teams, have been going though some stuff but I am a bit swamped with work. Hopefully I can post during the weekend

Team #1:

My observations (though I'm no expert... :D )

1. Loretta while a great hitter, isn't the guy I would use in Petco. I think he's a better fit in a neutral to hitting park. He's a 3 defensively, and probably giving up a few too many hits.

2. Manny is a great slugger with his natural HR's BUT if you are playing him in the field, he'll hurt you...especially in Petco.

3. People will argue back and forth about Pierre, but a +3 arm, for me, in CF will not cut it.

4. Rolen is under-performing right now as well. He'll come around.

Team #2:

This team was successful because:

1. Gordon / Nathan. Great seasons from both. While I like Atchison in a pitchers park, I want my most expensive pitchers ie. Nathan, to get the bulk of the innings.

2. Westbrook and Milton over-performed. Milton can be a gem in Petco. I've had a good season or 2 from Vazquez there as well.

3. Good defense up the middle with Cora/Clayton and Kotsay.
Note the (-) arm with Kotsay as well.

4. Berkman was an OB / RBI machine.

IMHO...When you attempt to duplicate success achieved with team #2, start with the defense up the middle.

On the other hand when attempting to play in a hitter's haven, start with offense.

Hey Cummings, thanks. Look forward to reading what you have to say.

Hey socal, thanks for your advice too. I may stick with Loretta as he has only made 4 errors so far and he is hitting pretty well and I have Amezaga sub for him and he's done ok. Manny is my DH because he'd kill me in the field. As for Pierre, I'm happy with his stolen bases and triples, etc and am just taking the risk with his arm. This team has started to win some games since I first did this post and I believe Rolen will come around too.

I see what you're saying about how to build a team for a pitcher's park vs. a hitter's park. I tried to make a team that would do relatively well at home and win on the road because the rest of the teams in my division are hitter's parks and so are most of the others in the league.

Just to think about with Loretta...

He's made only 4 errors on THE BALLS THAT HE GETS TO. What about all the other balls that he DIDN'T get to?

There's no doubt that Pierre will get on base and steal a ton. But in a small park, EVERY run is important. When there's a man a 2nd. base and a guy gets a single up the middle, he's gonna score with Pierre's arm. EVERY TIME.
