Many of the things on my wish list have already been mentioned:
- Die rolls rather than pitch counts. I want to know if my stud pitcher got beat because of his card, or because all the rolls fell to the hitters.
- Better explanation of what the manager settings and card settings actually mean. Playing this game should be about building the best team and tweaking it just right, not trying to figure out what pushes Hal's buttons.
- More control of in-game decisions, including the use of the bullpen, when to steal or pinch hit, and when to intentionally walk a batter. I like the idea of individual game settings vs 3-game series settings as well.
- More stats. Home and away statistics for the individual players would be nice.
The ideas that I haven't heard mentioned are:
- A better autodraft mechanism. While I'm not looking for the flexibility of a live draft, something with a bit more intelligence would be nice. Perhaps something where we rank players by position, and then draft by position, so that if we do not get our first choice at SP or CF, we get our second, and not instead Ed Reulbach or Earl Combs?
- The ability to change ballpark after the draft. I realize this isn't realistic, but neither is getting stuck with a team that is ill-suited for your home ballpark because the autodraft decided that you lost all the tie breakers.
- Trading flexibility! My favorite part of SOM is the draft & waiver period, simply because of all the options I have to get different players and broker deals. As soon as the season starts, I'm thinking about my next team, because trading in SOM is nearly non-existent. I don't know how to solve this problem (perhaps additional cap space at the start of the season that shrinks until the trading deadline?), but the lack of trading might be my personal biggest pet peeve with the game.
