1st-time user...and I didn't even check the cards

Postby MARCPELLETIER » Mon Feb 13, 2006 12:32 am

Hi guys.

This is my first and presumably last season in 1980. I had a free credit by error for this season, and I decided to use it anyway. I decided to go with a high on-base low-whip philosophy, and I selected the players solely on the basis of reputation.

I repeat: I don't know the cards at all. So I need your help. Only condition I ask you is to respect my high on-base low-whip philosophy while you provide your advices.

This is my team (as you can imagine, I didn't get half of the players I looked for):

BTW, I have one question about the mystery card:

does the player keeps the same year when he is traded or cut in the FA during the season and picked up by another team?

Same card all season long.

Welcome to the 80's Doctor Wilby. As this is your first adventure into mystery-cardville, be prepared to pull some hair out!! :D

Dropping the guys you mentioned is a good idea. Herr at 2nd would be a better fit than Thompson. I love Blyleven for your team (but unless your close to the top in waivers...forget it). Howe, James, Agosto, Crim are good bullpen choices. I'm not sure what you would want to do in centerfield...Moseby seems to be the best choice left, but McGee has 2 real good cards and is a 1-range player. I wouldn't recommend Raines in center as the 3-range will hurt your pitchers performance. Fisk behind the dish...I've never had or seen good numbers from Hassey and you should have at least 1 guy that can end the game with 1 swing.

Have you looked to trade? Did somebody get overstocked in centerfield? Trading is a real good place to start pre-waivers..."One man's ceiling is another man's floor".

Good luck.

I have to disagree with Jimmy C about Hassey. He can be a great platoon player.

...yeah, I think I'm gonna give a chance to Hassey vs rhp, which means that I should be looking for a catcher vs lhp. Any cheap bargain out-there, or should I stick with Wathan?

Hey [b:2c52d277df]lucky[/b:2c52d277df], there are some great RP values in the 80s game, if you get lucky ( ) with the mystery cards. I like to try to get one or more of these $.75 guys in the AD:

Lucas and T. Martinez from the left side
Garber and Nelson from the right side

You will see that you have about a 40% chance of getting excellent seasons from each of those guys. It's definitely worth a shot considering the price.

Also, I like to go for Burke (but so does everybody) as my closer. IMO, its much easier (and safer) to employ an inexpensive bullpen in the 80s game.

Soto will be a stud in a big park. Blyleven too. What is you waivers spot?

Get a good CF. Pettis is sometimes an option. He is a 1, has great speed, and nice OBP for the price. No power though, but could be a serviceable #9 hitter if there are no better options for CF.

Wynegar is a nice high OBP, low price catcher. No power though.

Thompson is a no go at 2B, for obvious reasons.

Phelps is an enigma. Many swear by him, and in many ways he is the ideal luckyman player. Huge OBP, low average, high walks, raw power. But for many people he consistently underperforms, and there are some theories out there as to why. He might be worth a look though.

Greenwell is another good gamble. Price tag is not too steep, and he has two phenomenal years.

Hope this helps.
