I agree with that summary.

Yeah, the FA gets picked over early, everyone scrambling to find lucky years.

Mystery Card

Postby Semper Gumby » Mon Feb 13, 2006 2:39 pm

I'm just now experiencing this practice. I'll be more keen on the next go around.

What has helped me not pull the trigger is to see how the cards perform in different parks / environments.

Trolling through a few past leagues, I get a feel how Reuschel's worse card or heavily titled card did in a similar park with consistent splits.

While I expected Reuschel to get hit in Royals, I didn't see him walking as many.

My team has a high walk rate for my batters ... I'm not seeing the high walk rates on all of my pitchers.

So, Reuschel had to go.

Bryn Smith - great card but wrong year for this division.

I'll probably eat my words on Kal Daniels but his numbers (as compared to his peers) - showed his worse card (last year). However, I felt conflicted because Kal showed some HR power but no doubles.

I should have waited for his injury to arrive but it made little sense when I could grab Greenwell and shore up my catching defense.

lol, I was trying to find a way to pick him up but my DH spot is taking by my hitting machine Polonia.

I might fit him in LF soon though. I just hate 4s in OF though :(

Kal Daniels

Postby Semper Gumby » Tue Feb 14, 2006 7:05 pm

He is either sporting his worse card (the power #s are off for that one) or his truly underperforming one (his OPS sucked). He didn't hit nearly as well as Boggs and didn't suffer many FLYOUTS. So, the jury is out on Kal.

I had high expectations for Kal but dropped him to take Greenwell [got Singleton when I took too long to make the add]. With the number of LHPs in our division now - Kal became expensive -

Since you have Richie Zisk - maybe the add / drop becomes academic for you. Of course, Richis is having strike zone issues now - 8 SOs - so far in limited plate appearances.

You may have his HR card given the breeze he generates now.

not many LHPs for me to really test him so far. That is why Daniels is temping for me, so many RHPs to feast on.

Time to Drop the BULLSHIP Flag

My steal settings: normal

In one game, Ted Simmons tosses out:

Butler (AA) 2 times  :x
Smith (AA)
Schmidt

I can't believe Simmons ever caught four runners one season nevertheless in one game.

To add insult to injury, two blown steals were inning ending outs and one steal preceded a double.

Of course, my team lost in extra innings by one run.

Damn this league is quiet

We had some activity today on the wires with Ron Guidry, Wade Boggs, Bret Saberhagen, Jack Morris, Bannister, and a few others going unemployed.

While the Gators' appearance on the wire was short lived - I suspect we'll see his 1980 or 1982 season in this league.

As for Wade Boggs, I'm sorry to have seen his card hit the pile (especially with Greenwell's card gone now). However, I know what season I had in my deck. :D

Took a flier on Bret Saberhagen and almost dropped him to grab the Gators' but figured with the number of cheap RHBs in my division - nah!

Of course, Chris Bando's card looked a lot better than my Milt May's card.

To that end, we'll see Guidry get the Cy Young now and Bret "just passing through" in short order.

I just noticed this board. Don't really plan to do much trash-talking as it appears I have gotten into a league with several top players and one or two living legends. Too bad for me I ended up in a division with at least one of those.

I did drop Guidry even though he is a favorite of mine as he convinced me he was definitely 80 or 82. My problem right now is I can't find a way to spend my money. Most of my team stinks and the FA market has been ripped through to the point it's hard to find anyone to spend money on. I was so desperate I picked up the WAAAAYYYY overpriced Mark Davis just to see how bad he could be.

I just hope Blyleven can go 35-5 for me.

One thing that really upset me is that I finally get the great Don Mattingly. He is either the best 80's hitter, or in the top-5...and I get his bad card. what great luck. I also got reveals on 3 other cards...all either 3rd,4th,or 5th best cards...all high-priced guys I built my team around. No luck for me this time. I'm thinking about going after Plunk pretty soon.
