Is it ever worth having Hard L/R pitchers?

Is it ever worth having Hard L/R pitchers?

Postby ANDYCOCHRANE » Mon Feb 13, 2006 9:09 am

I have had some limited success with having 9R and 9L balanced pitchers but I am beginning to wonder if they really are worth having. Do any of you use them and have you had any particular success? Do you use them in Pitcher or Hitter parks? How do you usaully set them up?

The reason I am asking is that I want to make sure my pitchers do not get shelled and avoid the high ERa's I invariably get using pitchers such as Adams, Brower etc

Not to me. HAL will never manage them properly. I would never go beyond a 4R or 4L unless he was a reverse pitcher like Pettite, Trachsel, Radke, etc.

I have Brower, and HAL seems to manage him perfectly. His ERA is in the mid 3s after 147 games. Of course he is set to avoid LH, quick hook.

Politte as been worth every penny of his $.50M for the purpose of getting 1-2 RH batters.

These guys can be great cheap protection against one sided teams. They of course need to be balanced by a reverse right and lefty. I have Yan and Cormier who have racked up innings, and done great. That's right -Yan. He is set to avoid righties. HAL manages him perfectly also.

I have used Yan with pretty good results if you manage him right. he generally pitches lots of innings often in the mid 3's to low 4's. He does get sheeled once in awhile when HAL goes off and leaves him (despite the restrictions) for 2-3 innings. Most of the time he is great. In fact I think he is a steal.

I've avoided many of these 1 sided RPs preferring the 1 sided SPs since they are in my control. I never trust HAL to make the right call.

Maybe some vets can chime in as to whther they agree or disagree with this statement:

[b:b4b3bb6340]Given a deep, well balanced pen, HAL will make the right bullpen call 99% of the time night in and night out. [/b:b4b3bb6340]

This assumes all the proper settings for hard, reverse, etc...

It does seem that HAL prefers reverse relievers. He will go to Cormier every time for example, and stick with him for awhile, with nothing checked off.

I generallly try to have a fairly strong and deep bulllpen (7-8 pitchers) and I have had success with guys like Walker and Leicester who are 9L and 9R.

Care to share some links to some successful clubs using the deep bullpens? I'd love to see the splits on how successful you can be to keep lefties away from Wistasik(sp?).

For 1/2 the season I had Halsey too ($.50M 9L), 7 relievers instead of 6. I needed a few bucks for one of my changes. I figured I didn't need him after adding Cormier, who has racked up a sick number of innings.

I believe if you have say 3 stud relievers, there is probably no need to have more than 6 relievers total.
