Better late than never... I hope? Please forgive the typos and spelling errors, as I was plunking away pretty furiously with these "fast five fingers of death".
[b:dd62f007c4]EAST[/b:dd62f007c4]
[b:dd62f007c4]BATTLE CATS[/b:dd62f007c4] First Place
Frisky has assembled a modern day "Murderer's Row" for this New Comiskey team and will certainly lead the league in runs scored. Unfortunately, the "Cats" will also probably lead the league in runs allowed. The starting rotation is pretty suspect after Lackey, and Mssr. Scooter hasn't even allowed himself the luxury of matching-up by only carrying 5 SP's. A deeper bullpen might have gone a long way toward alleviating this, but Frisky decided to go with a bevy of expensive sluggers instead. Come playoff time, he may be kicking himself for not carrying at least one SP* that could eat some innings for him.
[b:dd62f007c4]BLACKSMITHS[/b:dd62f007c4] Second Place
Joshua certainly has gone hard right with this Wrigley team... wonder if Bill O'Rielly helped him choose his players? I've seen a totally right-handed line-up succeed in the ATG games, but not in the 200X games, mainly because of the number of inexpensive hard-right-handed pitcher's available to counter this strategy. Fortunately for Mr. Logan, his division mates seem to have missed this while assembling their pitching staffs, so he may just get away with it. As such, he's got a excellent line-up for his park. I think that the Battle Cats are a little too powerful for this team to win the division, but it could be close, and this team will certainly be in the hunt for the wild-card.
[b:dd62f007c4]ANGELS[/b:dd62f007c4] Third Place
Mr Cook's Pac Bell team has the strongest starting pitching in the division, but it doesn't look strong enough to overcome the two dominat line-ups featured above. Witasick is fantastic out of the pen, but I can't find a closer to gather up the saves that he'll present. Gary's got some nice pieces in a Pac Bell line-up, but seems to lack a centerpiece or two to hold the whole thing together. A lot could depend on how much time Kearns spend on the disabled list. Even if he stays healthy though, the pitching isn't strong enough to dominate, and the line-up isn't poised to score enough runs to compensate. I'm thinking this is a solid pick for 3rd place.
[b:dd62f007c4]YANKEES[/b:dd62f007c4] Fourth Place
Maybe Alexx's team will surprise me, but I really doubt it. This Yankee Stadium team is populated by way too many players who are "last resort" options. ARod, Floyd, and Chavez are solid, Erstad and Wagner not bad, but after that we see a real drop off in talent. Of all the teams in the division, Mr. Daimler spent enough money on his pitching staff to have at least found an option or two to throw against the Blacksmiths, but for some reason he ignored this strategy? Unless I've really missed the mark on this one, Alexx will be looking to the FA pool and the trade market for help quite soon.
[b:dd62f007c4]CENTRAL[/b:dd62f007c4]
[b:dd62f007c4]PASSERS[/b:dd62f007c4] First Place
Kevin's put together a nice New Comiskey team, loaded with bargians in the line-up and on the pitching staff. I count 4 players who are either 1st or 2nd round draft picks in his line-up and 4 members of his pitching staff who can be classified as "bargains". Mr. Kelsey's team is the cream of this division and should win the pennant with room to spare. A couple of questionable platoon options may keep him from gaining home-field advantage through the playoffs though.
[b:dd62f007c4]PINTAILS[/b:dd62f007c4] Second Place
Tough call here, but I think that Gross's Skydome team should eek out a second place finish. Pedro pitching every 5th day coupled with a great bullpen should have him close to the top of the league in staff ERA. His line-up, while not over-powering, does have some nice options and Pujols as an anchor, so he should score more runs than he allows. This team could compete for the wild-card, but the Central looks like a tougher division than the East, so it will be an uphill battle.
[b:dd62f007c4]TITANS[/b:dd62f007c4] Third Place
"Lowe and Zito, then pray for rain!" will be the rallying cry for JD's Skydome team. Mr. Clark does have a decent pen put together, but I think he may find that he over-spent on this part of his team. His line-up, though, is where the questions arise. On a positive note, there are not many weak spots. On the negative side, there aren't many strong spots either. I just doesn't look powerful enough to score the necessary runs when the two staff aces aren't on the hill. I think JD will be wishing he made some minor adjustments to his salary allocations so that he could have afforded a third ace on this team. Perhaps he'll be able to pull off a big trade that will put him over the top.
[b:dd62f007c4]CACIQUES[/b:dd62f007c4] Fourth Place
Two obvious questions arise when looking at Roger's Fenway team: 1) Where are the runs going to come from? and 2) What the heck is a "Cacique"? To be fair, Mr. Zepernick's pitching staff isn't bad, and Gagne is a closer un-paralleled in the 200X games. I'm thinking, however, that going with a cheaper option than Miller in the rotation would've allowed Roger to upgrade Williams to a stud SP* to pitch every 4th day. Then perhaps his pitching would've been dominant enough to overcome a very lack-luster offense. Nice defense, but Edmonds is out of place and I don't think Rolen, McCracken, Boone and Snow will generate enough runs to push this team into contention.
[b:dd62f007c4]WEST[/b:dd62f007c4]
[b:dd62f007c4]THUNDERWOLVES[/b:dd62f007c4] First Place
Michael's Coors team has some of the right ingredients in place for a successful season. Halladay is excellent in this park, and Moyer should over-perform in this league. Mr. McConvey's bullpen may be too short for this slugger's park however, as even the strongest starting pitching needs help in this "homer haven". Manny, Berkman, Mags and Raffy provide a nice nucleus in his line-up, but there appear to be some holes here that may be too conspicous for the lack of pitching depth to overcome.
[b:dd62f007c4]PAULI BALL[/b:dd62f007c4] Second Place
Billy has the ultimate "small ball" player in Ichiro to build his Safeco team around, and Schilling, Mussina and Guardado are nice options in this "pitcher's paradise". After that however, the pickings look rather slim. The oufield and catching defense is very good, but I think Mr. Marin is going to wish that his infield "D" were a tad stronger when he starts loosing a few of those 1 run games because of a weak performance on the X Chart.
[b:dd62f007c4]ATHLETICS[/b:dd62f007c4] Third Place
I'm not sure what Dave is thinking about with this Network Assoc. team. He's got 4 very expensive SP*'s on his staff, yet chooses to include a 5th expensive SP also. Since Mr. Barstow's offense is almost non-existent, why not use that extra $7mil in salary to add some punch to that impotent attack? I have a feeling that he may make some changes during the course of the season, but dropping Burnett and upgrading just one position player is going to cost him at least $2mil, and in a game where each $1mil spent roughly equates to a win, this will only weaken his chances of competing for a playoff spot
[b:dd62f007c4]HERE AGAIN[/b:dd62f007c4] No Prediction
I'm uncomfortable making predictions about my own team, so will leave that for others to do. One thing I'd like to say however is: "In the 2002 game, it's a bad idea to drop drop Bernie Williams or Ben Weber!". Many thanks to whomever dropped these nuggets for me to pick up!
