[quote:984deafdbd]With the number of teams going for a few twists, [b:984deafdbd]the waiver wire activity will be strange.[/b:984deafdbd] So, I am happy that HAL gave me something besides Ron Kittle and company.[/quote:984deafdbd]

And, the post-waiver activity didn't disappoint me

Semper...I didn't think HAL would allow that many ball-slammers on the same roster.

Just noticed what slackers we are in talking smack in this league!!

I really like my chances with this team:

http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/baseball/stratomatic/80s/team/team_other.html?user_id=72665

My starters should be able to get 90 winnable games to the bullpen. I've never spent this much in the pen, so I'm looking to get my money's worth with quick hooks on the starters etc.

Oh yeah...smack...here goes...I really like my chances a lot because the players on the other 11 teams wear girlie underwear!!

Alive and Smacking

Jimmy,

[b:5b82921fe4]I love it![/b:5b82921fe4]

I recall playing the board game version with my father many years ago and he loved to run his "pie hole" about his team (197x Pittsburgh Pirates). Even though he probably hated playing the game (in the first place), he enjoyed himself to the last damn out. :D

I haven't seen that type of fun in TSN in quite sometime.

So, I'll call your boast and raise you one while I wait for the dinner bell at mi casa -

[b:5b82921fe4]OUR DIVISION[/b:5b82921fe4]

Dodgers X2 [pitchers]
Wrigley [hitter]
Olympic [neutral]

It doesn't take the newbie too long to recognize that single hitters will fare everywhere as the lowest ballpark effects location is Wrigley.

With the two Dodger stadiums, the difference becomes when you try your gang in the bigger parks. :D

In reviewing your team (my first look since the draft), your selection of contact hitters is perfect with[b:5b82921fe4] Brett [/b:5b82921fe4]and [b:5b82921fe4]Hernandez [/b:5b82921fe4]being ideal as well as paying for gloves to keep the games close. Given the two Dodger stadiums, you wisely didn't waste money collecting too many BPHR heavy batters ([b:5b82921fe4]Winfield[/b:5b82921fe4] playing ~100 games in Dodger land  ).

My three minor comments on your offense:
[list:5b82921fe4]Your investment in [b:5b82921fe4]Dyskstra[/b:5b82921fe4] is a tad high for my budget

Who spells [b:5b82921fe4]Gamble[/b:5b82921fe4] when he gets hurt / sees LHSP?

Where is the speed? [/list:u:5b82921fe4]

Otherwise, very nice crew.

Your pitching plays to the benefits of Dodger especially [b:5b82921fe4]Hoyt[/b:5b82921fe4]. Moreover, I love your gamble on getting [b:5b82921fe4]Waits[/b:5b82921fe4]' or [b:5b82921fe4]Caldwell[/b:5b82921fe4]'s playable card to round out your rotation. Not sure about mixing [b:5b82921fe4]Swan[/b:5b82921fe4] into the rotation as you didn't go with another non*SPs.

You can't go wrong with [b:5b82921fe4]Henke[/b:5b82921fe4] but then you invested another $5M in RPs above Tom's cost.

[b:5b82921fe4]KEYS to SUCCESS[/b:5b82921fe4]

[b:5b82921fe4]RPs[/b:5b82921fe4][/color:5b82921fe4]

Getting the lead early and keeping it. In your configuration, your hitters will play station to station but without much speed. Without another pure slugger, you're going to labor to manufacture large run totals. So, you will need to get a lead earlier and hope you RPs can come in and shut the door. Otherwise, HAL will select your weakest RPs (based on your settings) in the mop-up role.

When my Leathernecks come to your park, I hope that my Punch / Judy hitters: [b:5b82921fe4]Smith[/b:5b82921fe4], [b:5b82921fe4]Boggs[/b:5b82921fe4], and [b:5b82921fe4]Greenwell [/b:5b82921fe4] can get aboard enough for my sluggers to get lucky once or twice a series. [b:5b82921fe4]Cooper[/b:5b82921fe4], [b:5b82921fe4]Mitchell[/b:5b82921fe4], and [b:5b82921fe4]Murphy [/b:5b82921fe4] have enough natural HRs to make the match-up interesting.

As for my pitchers, I had to spend more on my starters given Wrigley's design but went for broke with the RPs. If I can't fish out one or two decent $.75m Lotto RPs, I'll need a great offense to build a lead that even a flame thrower can't burn up.[/color:5b82921fe4]

Just found the smack talk for the league and figured I must reply. As a newbie I'm sure that you are looking forward to running roughshod over me. But my girly underwear wearing team is going to show you that even though we are wearing the pink panties its that other 11 teams that are gonna be throwing like girls when they face off with us as I am on my way to a championship in my first ever season. Sit back and watch the carnage and try not to get hit with any of the trash talk I'm sure to be spewing over the next couple of months.

Good Luck all.

Hey Semper...Yeah, I was looking for guys who could just get on base and provide the kind of "D" to keep games close. I had a real bad draft, so my front office was working overtime to make up for it. I had a real good waiver round though. Gamble's platoon partner in leftfield is going to be Young.

Hey Terpfan...I think your team is the O's right? They look good and with the mystery card we are all at HAL's mercy.

Some of the reports coming out of training camp say the other teams watch chick flicks like "Sleepless in Seattle" and "Step Mom" on movie night...Yuch! My Stratzillas have been watching old "Rambo", "Rocky" and "Godzilla" movies and stuff like that!!

Scanning the league's rosters you see a [b:943028f6fe]"little of this and a little of that"[/b:943028f6fe]

A few teams are carrying an extra mid-price $ hitter. I'm wondering how that works out as you have to get that extra player at least 50 PAs to even get close to smoking out the possible card. Consequently, you'll necessarily drop the underperforming player only to find yourself with extra cash around the same time other teams have finalized their rosters.

I guess you can hope for an early injury but with the "LINEOUT" variety - you'll narrow it down to three years tops.

My draft and waiver results were average - far from stellar. My best move had been to select Wrigley as I had eight pitcher parks in my last league - Royals[/color:943028f6fe] and Dodgers [/color:943028f6fe]being the top picks.

While I don't have the game experience in the 80s format, I am curious why teams that select pitcher parks appear to overspend on pitching?

Understanding the mystery card aspect, it strikes me as prudent to work mid-tier pitching with defense while grabbing the hitters.

I'll be curious to see how [b:943028f6fe]Kal Daniels[/b:943028f6fe] works out. I haven't found his name among the usual suspects when I tour other leagues. Otherwise, I expect [b:943028f6fe]Ozzie Smith [/b:943028f6fe] and [b:943028f6fe]Bill Doran [/b:943028f6fe] to share my team's MVP award.

Hey Semper...the "Cleveland Leathernecks 2" are looking pretty good. I will bet that Mitchell ends up being your MVP. The 4 main starters look great, Burke in the pen can be fantastic, the .75 guys are all crap-shoots in this game so your's can be as good as any.

I think the one very major threat to your team is if you get the bad Murphy card. If '89 Murphy shows up at the stadium, your going to be scrambling for a replacement. Not sure what centerfielder left on FA could fill the spot.

With good cards, you'll probably end up leading the league in dingers.

C'mon opening day!!

Jimmy,

One thing about working on client stuff and it being below 15 degrees outside today - you're on the 'net with top cover when the wife appears in the home office. 8)

In my only other 80s team, I had the worse card for [b:effdb203d8]Boggs[/b:effdb203d8] (confirmed), [b:effdb203d8]Reuschel[/b:effdb203d8] (didn't need to wait), [b:effdb203d8]B. Smith[/b:effdb203d8], [b:effdb203d8]O. Smith [/b:effdb203d8](confirmed), and [b:effdb203d8]Butler[/b:effdb203d8]. Given most of these cards were at the top of my draft list, I 'm ready for [b:effdb203d8]Dale Murphy[/b:effdb203d8] to lay an egg.

On the same team, I probably onboarded [b:effdb203d8]Singleton[/b:effdb203d8]'s worse card when I dropped [b:effdb203d8]Daniels' [/b:effdb203d8] (had a possible 1990 :D or 1991 :( card).

In this league, my true Achilles Heel is [b:effdb203d8]Inky[/b:effdb203d8] besides my lotto pick RPs. If Inky reveals his bad card, it will hurt as I have [b:effdb203d8]Daniels[/b:effdb203d8] and [b:effdb203d8]Greenwell[/b:effdb203d8] to protect from LHSPs.
