2003 League starts tonight...I had a great draft. Hope I did not sabotage myself by making changes. My big problem was my failure to lasso a *SP. Now I have a 5 man rotation with my favorite suspects. I also failed to get my favorite closer Donnelly. It should be interesting with Mota in the role of closer.
The offense is the key. This is pretty much the offense I wanted.
CATCHER - Varitek ranks fourth in the Lamanna Baseball Bulletin with 8 diamond HR on both sides.
FIRST BASE - Thome ranks second behind Helton with 8 diamond HR on both sides.
SECOND BASE - I had Michael Young who ranks fourth and dropped him for Jose Vidro who ranks fifth. I rarely do this, but Vidro has 46 on base chances and 58 total bases against RHP while Young has only 37 on base and 48 total base chances against RHP. Against LHP, Vidro is 44 on base and 59 total bases with 6 diamond BP HR. Young musters only 33 on base and 48 total base with only 1 diamond BP HR against LHP. I got Vidro to bust Coffee on what will be a tight intradivisional race.
THIRD BASE - Mike Lowell ranks third behind Rolen and Mueller and has 8 diamond HR on both sides.
SHORTSTOP - Angel Berroa ranks fifth. He does have 6 diamond HR against LHP. (Come on Coffee! Be a man! Throw a lefty at this team! :P )
LEFTFIELD - Manny Ramirez ranks third behind Bonds and Pujols. Again the 8 diamond man on both sides. :D :P :D
CENTERFIELD - Jim Edmonds ranks number one. Again the 8 diamonds on both sides...
RIGHTFIELD - I would have loved to have gotten Sheffield but could not swing the dollars although I tried. Jose Guillen ranks sixth in right field. He has 6 diamonds against LHP and 8 against RHP. 8-)
DESIGNATED HITTER - Went from the high slugging, low on-base, possible injury prone Jeromy Burnitz to the safer Dimitri Young. Young ranks ninth in leftfield. He has 7 diamonds against LHP and 8 diamonds against RHP.
My team will hit. It may lead this league in home runs and maybe runs scored. It will be a question of whether the economy starting pitching that features no/low ball park effect home runs but a higher WHIP factor can do the job in tandem with a low budget bullpen with Mota who ranks ninth as a closer in close game situations.
