Sambito

Is it just me, or is Joe Sambito a bit undervalued? I know he's got the HR's on some cards, but he has only one really terrible year, and he just blitzes lefties. Would certainly work well in a R/L tandem save team (as he did with Dave Smith in real life).

Sambito slam

Postby honestiago1 » Sat Sep 10, 2005 9:57 pm

Can't figure out why he'd be so bad ALL the time. Guess he needs the dome, or some other pitcher's park to even have a chance.

1978 card: that walk v. RH on 5-6 ain't so good, but it shouldn't be a killer. A VERY good card.

1979: HR.s on RH side, 6-8 and ballpark 6-9. But overall difficult to hit, and good against lefties (as per 1978 )

1980: best card he's got, IMHO; big fat DOUBLE on 5-7 v. lefty, but VERY tough on RH's (3R), and only two straight out chances of getting on (walk on 4-10, single on 5-5) HR is only 1-2, and no BP HR on EITHER SIDE.

1981: HR on 4-9 (1-15); BP HR on 6-10 versus righties; DESTROYS LH's (just a pair of walks, and SI*, DO, both at 1-4; NO BP singles against lefties! Another good card

1986: By FAR the worst card; not worth even describing.

Four out of five cards are usuable; I would rate one of those four as OUTSTANDING, and another as VERY GOOD. He's worth a low pick, as he's only priced at 1.5M. He's got some cards on par with Sutter, who is 3.65M.

I still think he's undervalued. That said, he got blitzed in our league this year, and he does have an extra base problem when he DOES get hit. So, go figure.

The one time I had Sambito he was pretty solid: 6-7 with 8 saves in 89.2 IP; 3.72 ERA with 1.18 WHIP. Lefties hit .179 vs. him; righties hit .269. His achilles heel was HRs--gave up 12 HR in 89 IP in Dodger.

This was in a hitter dominated league, though. League average ERA was 4.59, and all my pitchers gave up HR, so I was quite happy with Sambito's performance. Interestingly, the confidence of other managers in Sambito didn't seem high. I picked him up after he'd been dropped by two other teams, though he got only 3.2 IP between the two teams.

Here's the team link in case you want to check it out.

Dawley

Postby honestiago1 » Sun Sep 11, 2005 4:05 pm

You sure got a great year outa Dawley. I wuold call it "Thigpen-esque." :)

Also looks like Ripken '83?

Forgot about Harrah. He always produced decent numbers.

Henderson, Bulter. Good combo. I have Raines-Butler at the top of my lineup, with '84 Sandberg batting 3rd. I also took Dayley. He's underpriced. Conversely, I think Bosio is overpriced.

Dawley was fantastic. There's one great year on his card, and I apparently got it.

Bosio probably is overpriced, but at one point he was the best available FA pitcher and I had the bucks so I grabbed him. He was big for me--solidified my struggling rotation and went 15-6. His ERA was good until a late season spike.

The team hit from the get-go. Ripken was amazing--141 RBI! That was partly because he had Henderson, Butler and Harrah getting on base ahead of him (I often batted Rickey third). Ripken might be '83 but I suspect '91 because he had a strong bias toward hitting lefties and '91 is 3L.

Overall, the team won its division and made the finals but lost there in four straight. An abrupt end to a great season...

Raines-Butler-Sandberg sounds great to me.

Ricky

Henderson definitely makes a great 3rd hitter. Avg., power, OBP. Just a great player. Only drawback he's ever had that I could see is the poor arm (but so what, right?). Yeah, Ripkin definitely killed for you. I didn't check what park you played in, but evidently Bosio handled it. He IS a work horse, I'll admit.

I just got an injury to Boone in my league (grrrrrrrr....) I had to pick up a 3rd catcher so I could platoon for 9 games. I dropped Bradley, got Salas (LH power), and Brookens (poor catcher, but hits). Figure I ain't throwin' no one out, anyway, so I may as well hit!
