NEW SUMMER LEAGUE - AUCTION - CHAT ONLY

Postby Palanion » Wed Jan 07, 2009 11:24 pm

I do like Don's time stamp 5-minute extension idea, because really when an auction comes down to the wire, it is probably going to be between 2-3 people only anyway.
Thus, I've changed my mind and the deadline thing works for me. :D

EAST
1. Mike Lopp
4. Mr. Baseball World
7. Palanion - Throwing Muses
10, gorshar

CENTRAL
2. ldanred
5. BobBoone - Seattle Maritimers
8. DONFESQ
11. gfdwarf07 - If It Takes All Summer

WEST
3. DHowser - Canadian Back Bacon
6. bkeat23
9. DOHOwser - The Cattle Auctioneer
12. mjruth - Fenway Green Monsters

And a reminder that Mike Lopp can pick a stadium at ANY time.

If it would be helpful, too, I could try to keep an Excel spreadsheet going throughout the draft that lists each team's players purchased price and value so as to maintain the $80M spent and $200M value. I have a personal Web site that I could easily add a page to just to house a link to the spreadsheet, along with maybe a rough html view of the rosters if I have the time.

Can we proxy a bidding range for players to Bob or someone.

Example: I am will to pay up to 3 million for Alexander.
Bob proxies to that for me?

I'm here!!

Okay... the draft.

I vote for the snake thing exactly as it's been described. I don't like the e-bay style deadline at all.

As for time zones and all that, I might point out that I'm on the opposite side of the world, 12 hours ahead of EST (11 hours during DST).

I'd hate to think that I'm bidding my heart out over Babe Ruth and then at 8:58 am (8:58 pm EST) I get some problem with a customer, get called away for an hour to deal with it and find I'm getting Braggo Roth and not Babe Ruth!!!!

I also don't think we should just go from the top of the salary list toward the bottom. I like that the bid winner chooses the next player on the block. If we go straight down the list, we'll never get to players at or below $4M.

And I keep going back and forth over the deadline thing. So, I can go either way on it.

Keep up the good work BobB.

The snake is selected as a draft method, even me, the e-bay idea guy agrees! Let's do it! Enough debate.....

Good morning, and WHAT IF

What if a player, say Clemente is on the block and the first 11 players pass on him. Does that allow player 12 to take him for the minimum amount? If so, I believe we should come up with a MAXIMUM minimum, try saying that 12 times quickly, amount. Perhaps this has already been discussed and I missed it.

I would say the 12th manager can have the player for whatever the minimum is, say $500K. The fact that eleven managers had the chance, and passed, says more than enough about what the league collectively thinks about the value of the player in question.

I had mentioned in the original thread about the concept of having a minimum bid. It can't be $500k because then the $500k players have no chance of being bargains. I propose half the printed $ rounded to the nearest $100k.

Examples:
Al Simmons $8.59M, minimum bid would be $4.3M
Bill Dahlen $2.79M, minimum bid would be $1.4M
Steve Bedrosian $3.63M, minimum bid would be $1.8M
Jimmie Foxx $13.02M, minimum bid would be $6.5M

I think we can all agree that the higher priced players at 50% would be HUGE deals if made. And even the lesser players still help, too. I mean, who would not be interested in snagging Dahlen for $1.4M if the situation came up? Good value.

Also, this way, we don't open EVERY bid with this scenario:
Sandy Koufax
Team 1 - $500k
Team 2 - $1M
Team 3 - $1.5M
Team 4 - $2M
Team 5 - $2.5M
Team 6 - $3M
Team 7 - $3.5M
etc.
Because no matter who's on your roster already, is anyone going to pass on the slim chance of getting Koufax for CHEAP money?
Rather, the situation could go like this:
Koufax
Team 1 - $5.5M (minimum)
Team 2 - pass
Team 3 - $6.5M
Team 4 - $8M
Team 5-11 pass
Team 12 - $8.2M
Team 1 - pass
Team 3 - $8.3M
Team 4 - $8.5M
Team 12 - pass
Team 3 - $9M
Team 4 - $9.1M
Team 3 - pass

Plus, maybe it's late in the auction draft and I need a 2B. In the meantime, everybody else already has a starting 2B and maybe even a backup if necessary. Team 1 announces Charlie Gehringer. No one bids until me at Team 12. I can have him with no fight. Certainly I would rather get him for $500k - MAJOR steal. But, it is still a huge bargain to get him for $4.9M. And, really, if the minimum was $500k, no one would pass on him until it got past "backup" money (e.g., $0.99).

Palanion's words are true and wise. Let's do the minimum at 50% - great idea!

Then we don't get into inadvertent $500K Mel Otts.

BTW, we should make sure we have all 12 owners committed to staying "in touch with the snake" (no euphemism intended there), as the snake can and will stall many times if we don't stay with it.

Can we (or did we already discuss?) a maximum time limit where if an owner doesn't pass or bid it's considered an automatic pass?
